Theophobia

When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground and were terrified. Matthew 17:6 NASB

Terrified – We live in a visual world. Tele-transportation of visual images has altered the face of our reality. In fact, even what used to be ordinary audio communication has now been converted into visual display of characters like the ones you are reading. But the world of the first century Jewish mind was not visually oriented. The thrice daily invocation does not say, “See, O Israel, the Lord is our God.” Speaking was the means of divine communication and hearing was the requirement of the follower. With the loss of audio primacy, a radically new conception of God and the world dominates. Just how much this radical revision separates us from the words of the Lord can be easily determined by asking an ordinary believer to recite correctly even the basic Ten Commandments. Could you do that? Probably not. You would just go look them up in print—in visual form. Remembering what God actually said is no longer thought to be necessary.

But the disciples Peter, James and John were not products of the television and print age. For them, hearing made all the difference. In fact, seeing the transfiguration of Yeshua didn’t strike them with fear. It would probably have had that effect on us (as special effects movie technicians know so well). But the sight of the appearance of Moses and Elijah with Yeshua didn’t drive them to the ground. The voice did!

Why? Why were they effectively unmoved by the sight but terrified by the sound? Ah, when they heard the sound of YHVH’s voice, they suddenly knew they were in the presence of the Most High and that meant they were extremely close to extinction. Just as the children of Israel elected not to approach YHVH after they heard the voice, so the disciples instantly recognized that they were in a place where no man can live. They knew theophobia, the terrifying fear of God.

Unfortunately, we don’t. We have been immunized to the words of God. We have converted those words into visual form, easily put aside, not necessary to memorize, not echoing from the mountains nor spewing forth from His prophets. We read them and consider them no more sacred than any other words. Yes, the meaning is sacred, but without the voice, they are just words. And that leads us to Yaconelli’s observation:

“Faith has been reduced to a comfortable system of beliefs about God instead of an uncomfortable encounter with God.”[1]

If you and I heard God speak, would we be terrified? Maybe, maybe not. The point is that we do not expect to hear Him speak. We have the Book. We don’t really need the author. But the words God speaks written in this Book are the voice of the Lord and they should terrify us. Why? Because if we manage to put ourselves into the scenes described in this Book, we will hear those words from the divine voice and we will be afraid. We must overcome the visual immunity, unlearn the filtered expressions and encounter the living God in the Book, for it is not the Book that matters. It is the God whose words are in the Book that matters, and until we can hear His words voiced from the Book, we will be removed from the uncomfortable encounter.

“But to avoid mystery is to avoid the only God worthy of worship, honor, and praise.” (Manning, p.57)

…I can only describe it like an oxymoron…it’s something I desire with every fibre of my being and yet am afraid…

Ever Always Only

~ Now, to the King eternal-immortal-invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever ~ (1 Timothy 1:17)

(Hear, O Israel) ~ Faith comes by (??).. – Yes, “hearing.” I heard that. And I know that’s right!- Furthermore.. “faith” (that which pleases God, btw..) comes by hearing and NOT (yes, emphatically NOT) by sight!!.

~ For we look NOT to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal ~ For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal ~

My faith still holds onto the Christ of Calvary
Oh blessed Rock of Ages cleft for me

I gladly place my trust in things I cannot see
My faith still holds onto the Christ of Calvary

I thought I had
To see and feel
To prove that what I loved
Was really real

But passion turned to ashes
Things I held to dust

I found reality in simple trust..

~ we (now) walk by faith, – NOT by sight.. ~

Perhaps a little less “sight-seeing” and a little more “faith-walking!!”

~ for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him ~ (Hebrews 11.6)

He is!!

~ When they saw Him, they worshiped Him, but some doubted.. ~
(Matthew 28.17)

(Ever, always, only) ~ fixing our attention (our focus) on Jesus, [let us gaze at Yeshua] the Pioneer and Perfecter of our faith, who, in view of the JOY set before Him, endured the cross, disregarding its shame, – and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God ~ (Hebrews 12.2)

It’s often been said that a movie is not a movie
until the soundtrack has been added.

God’s Word is the soundtrack to real life —
“He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

Rodney

Love it, Rich! Mind if I quote you on that? 🙂

laurita hayes

Rich, I really like that. “God’s Word is the soundtrack to real life.”
That one is going to follow me today!

There was a father, years ago, a rather large man who could be quite formidable to someone who didn’t know him. In speaking, his voice was steady, certain and direct and you knew without asking that he stood behind his every word…not one you would want to question foolishly…and heaven help anyone that would pose a suspicious threat to his wife, his children or property. At the same time watching him with his-very well behaved children- was enough to melt butter. In the same way, my Father’s voice can rattle the heavens and leave no question as to Who is speaking. However, in his own way, David, a man after God’s Heart had his own relationship.
Ps.131: “Adonai, my heart isn’t proud; I don’t set my sight too high, I don’t take part in great affairs or in wonders far beyond me. No, I keep myself calm and quiet, like a little child on its mother’s lap-I keep myself like a little child.”
Ps. 130: “Yah, if you kept a record of sins, who, Adonai, could stand? But with you there is forgiveness so that you will be feared.” (Evidently, His tender mercies garners respect.)
Ps. 71: “In you, Adonai, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame. In Your righteousness, rescue me; and help me to escape. Turn your ear toward me, and deliver me. Be for me a sheltering Rock, where I can always come. You have determined to save me, because you are my bedrock and stronghold.”
Ps. 69: “God, you know how foolish I am; my guilt is not hidden from you. Let those who put their hope in You, Adonai Elohim-Tzva’ot, not be put to shame through me; let those who are seeking you, God of Israel not be disgraced through me….God, let your saving power raise me up. I will praise God’s name with a song and extol Him with thanksgiving. This will please Adonai more than a bull with its horns and hoofs. The afflicted will see it and rejoice; you seeking after God, let your heart revive. For Adonai pays attention to the needy and doesn’t scorn His captive people.”
Ps. 36: “Crime speaks to the wicked….set is he on his own bad way that he doesn’t hate evil……You save man and beast, Adonai. How precious, God is your grace! People take refuge in the shadow of Your wings, they feast on the rich bounty of Your House, and you have them drink from the stream of Your delights. For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light. Continue Your grace to those who know You and Your Righteousness to the upright in heart. Don’t let the foot of the proud tread on me or the hands of the wicked drive me away…”

I guess it all depends on the relationship.

Marsha

Having said that-I should also say, when everything is done and done and eternity begins, I fully expect to be flat on my face unable to even move, much less speak for at least 1,000 years.

laurita hayes

Too beyond even fun for words. I’m with you!

Ester

To hear- שָׁמַע is to obey. When we ask our kids-Do you hear me? It means – are you doing what I told you to?
Jer 7: 23 “But this is what I commanded them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you will be My people; and you will walk in all the way which I command you, that it may be well with you.’

“Yes, the meaning is sacred, but without the voice, they are just words”, just as ‘knowing’ Him through information/learning is no way near to having an encounter with Him. Folks who have such encounters have a tremendous change in their characters and attitudes.

בעת אל -the fear of YHWH, theophobia, is what is so lacking in our lives.
The fear or awe of YHWH leads us to humility and respect of people.
Micah 6:8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does YHWH require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

A timely TW, Skip, there is much terror surrounding us but the terror of YHWH.
Shalom.

Maureen

In studying your picture Skip there are two birds reflected in the water that I did not see at first. One is perched on the front of the boat and the other on the rear. Fabulous photo and you have my vote even if I can’t say so on Facebook.

Charlene Ferguson

Skip, thanks for this post. It really made me think about what’s happening….. and to remember!
