The Open Universe

So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that He had done in creationGenesis 2:3  ESV

He had done in creation – When God created the universe, was everything in it fixed?  When God formed the whole creation, did He establish all the pathways that it would travel in order to reach its intended end?  In other words, are all the events in the universe already established because they were in the mind of God at the beginning?

If these questions sound too philosophical to be of interest to you, perhaps one of the implications won’t be.  If you answered “Yes” to any of the above, then you implied that all your choices and all the choices of anyone who has ever lived (or ever will live) were already fixed at the moment of creation.  If God foreknew what we would all do, then how can we say we have a “free” choice?  And if we don’t have a free choice, then how can God hold us responsible?  Oh, yes.  If you don’t like these implications, then does that mean that God didn’t know what was going to happen?

Genesis 2:3 presents us with an unusual word that suggests perhaps everything is fixed at creation.  The problem is that we don’t see this unusual word in translation because it has been altered to fix our grammar and syntax.  The word is the verb ‘asah.  The verb itself isn’t unusual at all.  In fact, it’s used over a thousand times in Scripture.  What’s unusual about ‘asah in this verse is that it is the infinitive form.  Literally, it doesn’t say, “He had done in creation.”  The ESV alters the text to read this way.  It literally says, “God rested from all his work which God created to make.”  The ESV adds “in creation” and changes the infinitive (to do, to make) into a past tense (had done).  There seems to be no justification for this except theological, not linguistic.  Zornberg reveals an insight lost in the altered translation.  “To ‘make’ the world is the charge that God left man with at the end of the original creation process, when ‘God ceased from all the work of Creation that he had done.’”[1] Zornberg points out that this same infinitive construction is used in God’s question to Havvah and to the serpent.  They are asked about what they have made, what world they have formed.  The implication is that the world is shaped by the choices we make.  It is not fixed in eternity.  God creates the world open to forming.  All the possibilities are there.  But Man forms this open world through choices by restricting the possibilities to actualities.  Man makes the world as it is from all the worlds that could have been.  God creates a universe of many doors.  Men choose to open some and close others.  The world changes.  “As by one man, sin entered into the world” is the equivalent of saying, “Adam opened one of the doors and everything changed.”

You are going to open some doors today.  The ones you open will change the shape of the universe.  Your choice will alter everything from this point forward.  If you find the weight of your choice too much to bear, then you know why no man can live without grace.

It is a bit scary to think that God turned over to man the job of continuing the creation process. It seems that it has been a botched job! Without grace there is no hope at all. I will live with that since it seems I have little choice about my responsibilities.

When God created the universe, was everything in it fixed? When God formed the whole creation, did He establish all the pathways that it would travel in order to reach its intended end?

Probably not in the sense that we’ve been taught, but He DID make the rules.

So….. the answer ( 🙂 ) is yes and no!

Gayle Johnson

Robert,

I believe that He made (and activated) the Laws of the Universe. Then He gave us the instructions as to how to work and live within them to continue the Creation in an orderly manner. Anything else leads to chaos, and it seems that often we have chosen that (maybe by not choosing).

robert lafoy

I agree, the question that remains is what is the “result” of those laws as they pertain to human activities?

In other words, if disobedience is “self destructive”, ie: it destroys itself along with those involved with it and capable of practising it, what’s the end result of that “law”?

It’s the same with obedience (it has a result). They’re both “choices” and the consequences are dictated by God Himself.

Of course this doesn’t address the issue of grace along with many other factors but it is a fundamental concept. If we don’t grasp it we don’t understand how God can say He is purely holy and yet take credit for creating evil.

As God’s children glorify Him in opening and closing these doors, creation is freed! It’s waiting on tippy tippy toes of expectation for that! 🙂

Jan Carver

WHAT ARE YOU TYPING ABOUT??? DON’T GET IT???

December

Hi Jan, see Romans 8:19-20.

Jan Carver

“It’s waiting on tippy tippy toes of expectation for that!” IT WAS/IS THIS THAT I DIDN’T QUITE UNDERSTAND – NEVER HEARD THIS PHRASE BEFORE TODAY…

I LIKE TO READ MORE THAN JUST THE THE 2 SCRIPTURES IN ROMANS 8 TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS BEING SAID OR TYPED… BEING PREGNANT WITH PROMISE IS WHAT I HEAR… ♥

ROMANS 8:18-25
18-21 That’s why I don’t think there’s any comparison between the present hard times and the coming good times. The created world itself can hardly wait for what’s coming next. Everything in creation is being more or less held back. God reins it in until both creation and all the creatures are ready and can be released at the same moment into the glorious times ahead. Meanwhile, the joyful anticipation deepens.

22-25 All around us we observe a pregnant creation. The difficult times of pain throughout the world are simply birth pangs. But it’s not only around us; it’s within us. The Spirit of God is arousing us within. We’re also feeling the birth pangs. These sterile and barren bodies of ours are yearning for full deliverance. That is why waiting does not diminish us, any more than waiting diminishes a pregnant mother. We are enlarged in the waiting. We, of course, don’t see what is enlarging us. But the longer we wait, the larger we become, and the more joyful our expectancy.

26-28 Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.

I love what Skip is talking about here, “The implication is that the world is shaped by the choices we make. It is not fixed in eternity. God creates the world open to forming. All the possibilities are there. But Man forms this open world through choices by restricting the possibilities to actualities. Man makes the world as it is from all the worlds that could have been. God creates a universe of many doors. Men choose to open some and close others. The world changes.” It is both sobering and exciting. It’s something the children of God are walking out even now.

Gayle Johnson

Wow, this is powerful. This understanding is why I am where I am today. I truly believe this view, that you have stated so well. Each action we take moves us nearer to, or further from The Creator’s ideal for humans. And also, nearer to Life, or nearer to Death, as the Laws of the Universe (placed here by The Creator) do not abate (except by His command).

FREE WILL is a sacred component in human beings. Any desire and/or attempt to circumvent another’s FREE WILL is a desire to ‘kill’ them as a human. We tell ourselves it is ‘for their own good, safety, or salvation,’ but is is really to dispell our own fear. Our challenge is to live the Truth we see and know, so that the Love of God will be seen in our lives.

carl roberts

Oh, when God said “amen!” (let it be so!). Creation was (and continues to be) a miracle! Far beyond the understanding of Job and also beyond the capacity of my child-mind. It is imperative for me to simply say, “God did that!.” ~ The Heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament reveals His craftsmanship ~ (Psalm 19.1,2) God is the ultimate Artist! – No doubt in this man’s tiny mind. From seeds to stars, He does all things well! (and another amen! lol!)
Love is a choice. ⃪ Choose well, for our choices (all of them) contain consequences. Good choices-good consequences, bad choices- bad consequences- this is the Law of the Harvest. We will reap what we sow. It is built into the fabric of the universe,- what “goes around, comes around..”- We (all) will reap what we have sown.
Even Adam, in a perfect paradise was able to choose. He remembered the instructions of His Creator “don’t eat the fruit,” but willingly, knowingly, purposefully choose to believe the serpent’s words and sin (disobedience) entered into what once was a perfect world.
In a perfect world, one we have never lived in (yet!)- no one sins. This “perfect” world is a sinless world. Are you able to imagine a world with no sin? Neither can I, but wouldn’t it be nice?
This “sinless world” does exist today, but it isn’t this one, for this world, the world we now live in is “tainted.” ‘Taint what it used to be- and seems to be (be careful now! -for appearances can be deceiving!) -gettin’ worse every day!

There is a place of quiet rest,
Near to the heart of God.

A place where sin cannot molest,
Near to the heart of God.

O Jesus, blest Redeemer,
Sent from the heart of God,

Hold us who wait before Thee
Near to the heart of God.

There is a place of comfort sweet,
Near to the heart of God.

A place where we our Savior meet,
Near to the heart of God.

There is a place of full release,
Near to the heart of God.

A place where all is joy and peace,
Near to the heart of God.

O Jesus, blest Redeemer,
Sent from the heart of God,
-Hold us who wait before Thee
Near to the heart of God.

There was another miracle- far greater than Creation! This is the miracle of Calvary! Friend, we gain far more “in Christ” than we ever lost in Adam!

Who are we “in Christ?” (Christian, fasten your pew-belt!)

wow Carl, your list is amazing 🙂

Ian Hodge

Traditionally there have been three choices to this issue:

1. Fatalism: All is fixed. Nothing you can do to change what will be, que sera, sera. Islam is the modern proponent of this view.

2. Deism: The Enlightenment alternative to fatalism, which implies God created everything, then left it to run on its own devices. He sits back as an onlooker to the events of the world. Having started the clock running, he no longer needs to interfere with it.

3. The third alternative accepts the eternal decrees and man’s free will at the same time, recognizing there is a huge qualitative difference between God, the uncreated being, and mankind, created in the image of God, not a duplicate of him.

The choice of either one of these contains its own logical problems. Fatalism is rejected because it does not fit with the notion of choice. Deism is a problem since it seems to be content with God’s transcendence but has little to say about his immanence, without which prayer does not seem an overly useful activity since God has no intention of interfering in what’s going on in his world. The third choice seems to offer a self-contradictory set of circumstances.

But logic is not the issue here, because all the answers contain a logic problem of one kind or another. The choice becomes which set of problems are you willing to accept.

And the solution to that is which answer best fits the biblical data, not which answer fits the finite capacities of human logic.

Ian Hodge

Your explanation of paradoxes below is excellent. Perhaps they are also there to remind us of our limitations. Otherwise, if it were completely logical to us it just might occur to some of us that we are, after all, one with the divinity, equal in power and glory. And so you see:
One God — three persons
Necessity of works in justification — but they are, after all, not meritorious
YHVH’s sovereignty — yet genuine contingency and choice for mankind

It’s as you’ve explained the concept of time, seasons and sabbaths. God’s timings are there to remind us he’s in control. Paradoxes remind us similarly that we are not in control.

Dorothy

Paradoxes?
We only misunderstand things because of comparing God’s knowledge with our own.

God is Almighty, Omniscient, still on His throne, has made us more than conquerors.
Everlasting Love opens some doors and closes others. The doors are in His hand! (Rev. 3: 8) printed out below)

See here:
“Unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.” Matt. 24:22 (whoever opened it, GOD SHUT IT)

“I will turn you about and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out, and all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them splendidly attired, a great company with buckler and shield, all of them wielding swords” Ezekiel 38: 4

“I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name.” Rev. 3:8

Do not focus on what is against you, remember the One who is with you. If you forget His power, you will be paralyzed by fear.

Psalm 57, David says that God “will fulfill his purpose for me,” — a confident conviction.
Because God is “Most High,” he has the power and authority to do whatever he desires. He will bring to fruition his plans for David. . . .and for us too. If we put our trust in the Lord, if we seek to honor him with our lives, then he will fulfill his purpose for each one of us.

Echo of Psalm 57:2 in Phil. 1: 6: “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”

Dorothy

with that explanation, so do I!

Dorothy

Oops, that smiley with the shades like Patricks’ is supposed to be an 8, don’t know who opened to door for him to jump in there!

Dorothy

Dwelling on these verses, I remembered an illustration some of you may like. (some may have heard it)

It was first a sheet of new paper, then a child comes and begins to color with crayons. It isn’t going like they hope, no eraser for crayons, trying to correct choices makes a bigger and bigger mess, until finally the young artist draws crazy lines with such pressure that the crayons break and the child stomps off crying. Such an unpleasant attempt at making a pretty picture to give her father!

But in the silence behind her, the hand of a Master Artist picks up a permanent marker, and His strokes are fast and sure, He knows exactly what He has in mind….until on the paper now sits a picture of a vibrant parrot, the feather colors all falling in the correct places, even the darks are worked in to highlight the brightest hues.
And because He is a Master, and nothing is impossible to Him, He merely brushes His hand lightly across the page and the out of line marks dissolve as if they never were.

Now the picture presented to the Father is breathtaking! Yes, the child with free will made every single mark and chose every color and pressure used , but the Master knew where to draw the outline to make it fit. He didn’t created it all before she came in the room, but He did long ago create His permanent marker and had it ready for the day it was needed.

Interesting idea Skip- thank you for posting – will pick the brains of my Hebrew lecturer over this word – it is rather odd

weighing scripture with scripture:

Rom 9:19 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?
Rom 9:20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
Rom 9:21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
Rom 9:22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:

does not the Apostle Paul reach the end of this argument here in Romans 8 by essentially saying God will do as He pleases – – not only is He involved, but He directly predestines us – He is behind all affairs – now I don’t know why He chose to let Adam and Eve go all the way with their disobedioence and sent a sea creature to swallow Jonah and stop him in his tracks???
but He is directly involved – for His ultimate purposes and glory. seems far from the ‘Universe with many doors’ idea (although it is an attractive one) –
