Lioness

An excellent wife who can find?  She is far more precious than jewels.  Proverbs 31:10 ESV

Excellent – Maybe we stumble around the real meaning of eshet-hayil because we don’t like the cultural implications, but “excellent wife” or “woman of virtue” or “wife of noble character” just doesn’t cut it.  Eshet-hayil is a warrior!  This is Joan of Arc poetry.  This woman fights for what is right, upholds God’s standard, makes a difference, and demonstrates responsible, representational authority as God’s hands and feet.  Our translation attempts to describe her in terms of inner character completely overlook the public, active aspects of Hebrew thought.  The assertion of her “excellence” depends on an unnamed standard – again pushing the idea toward some inner evaluation.  But Hebrew warrior poetry is in your face, up front assessment of her behavior!  She acts like God would act.  It’s visible to all who look.  She stands for something good.  She is (as Waltke says) a “valiant woman.”

I know one such woman in particular.  Her name is Rosanne.  I am married to her.  She is a warrior.  Today is her birthday.  I just though you might like to know. 🙂

Rosanne and I have conflicts.  What would you expect from a warrior?  We don’t always see eye-to-eye.  But we are committed to each other. Oops!  That last statement isn’t quite biblical.  I am committed to her (much better, Genesis 2:24) and as a result she is dedicated to me.  She blesses me with her insightful advice and forceful acts.  Most of the time I try to listen (but I often find my yetzer ha’ra interfering with what I know is the biblical perspective).  When I do, I discover Proverbs 31:11 applies to me.  When I don’t, I usually regret the mistake.

She is God’s gift to me.  How that gift impacts my life is entirely up to me.  She is His gift even if I don’t avail myself of His generosity, but as I learn to accept God in her blessings, I discover what I was missing most of my life – me at peace with myself!

As you know by now, one of the things I love most about South Africa is the chance to spend time with lions.  You will not understand the power and beauty of these creatures until you encounter them up close in the wild.  You may not know this, but the lioness runs the pride.  There may be more than one female, but the dominant female actually has the real power, and is capable of killing the male if he does not perform as expected.  Lions are very social animals.  Even when they have the opportunity to escape from captivity, they will stay close at hand because they are first and foremost family oriented.  They protect each other, stick to each other, enjoy each other in ways that many of the other big cats don’t.  When the pride is functioning as it should, the male is at peace.  The dominant female watches over the pride.  Things are right in the world.  It seems I have a lot to learn from lionesses and Rosanne.  I am glad to have a warrior-protector-teacher in my life.  Things are right in my world.  Happy birthday, sweetheart.

NICE SKIP.. giving honor where honor is due is biblical. It is a good thing to honor the GOD given wife even when it may be hard to do at times, we have HIS STRENGTH and we have HIS WORD that HE IS OUR EXAMPLE.
Keep on keepin on in the faith of our fathers !

Wow! This just blessed me so much. I always thought you must have an amazing wife to be able to do all you do. Happy birthday Rosanne may Yah bless and keep you as a lioness.

I am in the UK my house up for sale returning to my ethiopian husband in a couple of weeks. We then begin the process for making Aliyah! Please pray for us as we know this is all Yah’s doing and we have gone through much to get to this point…. Long story!!! But this word today resonated so much as I am a warrior and have engaged in many battles on behalf of my husband and our families… now seeing the results of being the woman he made me to be. Be encouraged all lionesses out there in the community.
Christine

Excellent. May you and Rosanne bless YHVH

What a timely message Skip! The ‘lioness’ in me is revived…where once it was felt as if it were beaten with a stick and was slowly crouching toward the door…it is now…recovering…remembering the ‘function’ in her description by the Holy One … and recovering….

Todah Rabah!

Judi Baldwin

I, too, am blessed with a warrior lioness who uses her German heritage along with her
abundant faith. I’m kept very well in line!
Best wishes, Rosanne, for a wonderful birthday. And thanks for doing what you do
behind the scenes to keep Skip walking the straight line that he does!

Gary Flint

Well said Skip! As I have learned about the word Ezer I am seeing more and more why I married my bride
Awhile back I was struggling with balance in my life which was negatively affecting my family which only added to the problems. One shabbat I attended a fellowship and a lady there said something very influential to me. She said when I get things in order with Abba then these things would begin to come into order. It stuck with me but took me awhile to begin implementing. However when I did things began to come into order. I now realize that she was acting in this role of warrior. That advise has brought me to the place I am now. I now see that. Thank you for your ministry and the time you devote to this. Shalom!

Daria

Skip and Rosanne,
I am so blessed to read of Skip’s love for his ezar kenegdo. (? is that spelled right?) Skip, you are so wise. Rosanne, I would love to get to know you!
For most of our married life, I was battered and abused in “the church” because I am a warrior and my husband has been conditioned, thru his birth family, to be more passive (he is learning!) Can you say “tons of damage to our (blended) family?” All of our children are grown now, but the deep wounds, anger, resentment and fragmentation remain.
As we learn to be GOD’S COUPLE (without relationship with most of our kids/grandkids… soooo sad), life makes sense. We are both becoming stronger and more capable (even tho I’m physically disabled), growing ourselves and each other to glorify God and blessing one another and those around us.

First of all ‘happy birthday to Rosanne’,
Thank you for your little tit bits you send us each day — I really look forward to them. Roy has bought me the ‘guardian Angel’ book, so I must get around to reading it….
As regards to the lioness being able to kill the mail lion – brought to mind the fact that praying mantas females bite off the head of the male when she has finished with him – God did create some strange characteristics – I guess that’s where the saying came from ‘to bite someone’s head off!!! 🙁
Really looking forward to coming to Israel with you – if you have room – God willing! We live in Australia.
Anne 🙂

Dear Skip,
About a month ago I researched the Hebrew and made a video about the proverbs 31 woman, applied to Israel and the earthly Jewish wife’s blessing on the eve of Shabbat. It is an eye opener, and you just verified Prov31:10 -12 as I also saw it. Watch this and see who and what it could also be addressing.

Thank you, Antoinette, for digging deeper into the Scripture for this expanded understanding of the words used in this chapter. It is quite beautiful.

Ester

Dear Rosanne,
YHWH bless you and keep you, His Face turned towards you, His Shalom fill you always. Amein!

Thank you for standing by Skip, loving, encouraging and strengthening him while he ministers the Word. He so needs it as he does get bombarded by this lot here. 🙂 He is a wonderful guy too.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Blessings from us here in Aussie land. Hope you had a wonderful day!

Thank you Skip for letting us in on this. What a blessing!

Incidentally, I was also reading Guardian Angel last night! What a fabulous book! I started reading it sometime back, but left it, so glad I picked it up again last night.
Highly recommended! (written by Skip)

Antoinette, how can we see the video you made?

But a good warrior isa loyal to his leader!
A woman is not a good warrior, if she contends with him…then his heart can not safely trust her…a good warrior fights for the cause of the leader…not for her own cause…
I see the word and concept of chayil, as teaching and training to LIVE, to life, lachaim!

U teach a soldier how to live as he protects the lives of others…

A wife gives life to her husband and is trained to teach her children to be life givers and life keepers
What a think?
