Nails

but one who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Hebrews 4:15

Has Been Tempted – Nails weren’t customary. Did you know that? Most criminals were not nailed to a cross. They were simply tied to the post. Death by crucifixion did not occur because of the torture of nailing or even piercing. It was not loss of blood that killed the victim. It was suffocation. The outstretched arms prevented the lungs from exhaling moisture. The immovable, bent legs prevented the body from shifting the weight. Over time the lungs filled with fluid. Slowly, very slowly, the victim just couldn’t breathe anymore. Rome perfected the most torturous form of death invented by Man. But it didn’t require nails.

So, why not crucify Yeshua in the ordinary way. It would have been just as effective. Even the prophecy could have been fulfilled without the nails since it only required being “hung on a tree.” No, nails served a different purpose; one that none of his executioners even realized.

The Greek verb here is peirazo. It is derived from another verb that means “to test by passing something through the substance.” This is the verb used to test cloth or metal. Metaphorically, its derived sense means to put to trial or to tempt. But pay particular attention to the imagery. In order to ascertain the quality of something, it was perforated. Nails! You want physical imagery of temptation? Think of the nails passing through Yeshua’s wrists. This is the picture of an examination of strength or weakness. His death is the portrait of strength, not weakness.

The verb is a passive perfect participle. You might not care about the grammar, but you need to know what this means. First, it is passive. That means the action is done to the subject. Something from the outside affects the subject. Just as the nail passes through the wrist, so temptation is a blunt force of harm and destruction from the outside. Temptation happens to us. Sure, we might play a part in the propensity and we certainly have a role in the response, but temptation starts with something on the outside. That’s why we have the opportunity to resist. If temptation were an essential part of our very being, there could be no resistance. Which among you can resist being male or female? Which among you can prevent yourself from being tall or short, blond or gray (forget hair dyes) or anything else essentially you. If temptation is essentially you, then give up now. You simply can’t resist.

This verb is in the perfect tense. In Greek, this is an action completed in the past with continuing significance for the present. Now we see why it is used here. What He endured is common to all of us. No, we didn’t all have nails hammered through our wrists. We weren’t all crucified by the Romans. But we all face the test of quality. He faced it without failing. He accomplished the will of the Father. He knows exactly what it is like to suffer under the force of the enemy. That’s what’s the same. Our circumstances might not be His, but the attack is identical, the test identical and therefore, He knows us right down to the core.

Oh, yes, it’s a participle – a continuing action. That’s why we translate “having been tempted.” Not one incident but a whole lifetime wrapped up in a summary action verb. His life’s summary can be ours. How? How can we share in the “perfect” life? Ah, because He invites us to.

The bad news is- the ‘gospel” is by “invitation only.” Very exclusive. The good news (gospel) is- “whosoever will” may come. Very inclusive. Now, which is it? Inclusive or exclusive? The answer is..Yes! -both! This is the “straight gate” and this is the “narrow way”. The proclamation of the excecution stake is to them that are perishing, “foolishness”; but unto us which are being saved/delivered, it is the power of YHWH unto salvation/deliverance.
We know the “rest of the story”. We have read the book and know how it ends. The crucifixion of the Christ ends three days later in total victory and His coronation and crown: “all power has been given unto me”. Glorious resurrection, revival and renewal from G-d the Father.
When I think of Who it was that willingly received those nails and that crown, Who endured at the hands of sinful men, the verbal and physical abuse, Who it was that hung naked and shamed before the world’s unworthy stage, I am stirred to the depths of my being and feel my blood “come alive”. And yes, I am the one who caused His death, because He died for me. I know what I have done. It’s not pretty at all, neither to me or to my G-d who is holy. Thank G-d for His atoning blood. I need forgiveness and I need a covering.
How can we possibly even begin to walk in holiness without the doorway of the cross? We cannot. G-d is a god of order. “let all things be done decently and in order”. He made/makes a cosmos out of chaos. The cross must come first before the crown. We must go through the cross in order to receive the crown. We must “enter in” through the “torn veil” of the temple to go in to the HOLY PLACE.
There is so much to say concerning (t)His cross; -volumes have been written and will continue to be in days to come. I will always remember this life-changing demonstration of divine love. If love is “benevolence toward another at cost to myself”, (I agree brother Skip!), -think of the cost of Calvary.. Entering into this special season of the year as we celebrate two special set-aside days of remembrance.. I will echo this song with many others.. “thanks be unto G-d for His unspeakable gift.”

“thou must rule over it”

Genesis 4:|5| But unto Kayin and to his minchah (offering) He had not regard . And Kayin was very angry, and his countenance fell. |6| And Hashem said unto Kayin, Why art thou angry? And why is thy countenance fallen? |7| If thou doest right, shalt thou not be accepted? And if thou doest not right, chattat (sin) croucheth at the petach (door). And unto thee shall be its teshukah (desire), and thou must rule over it.

And of course Kayin did not rule over it and ended up being permanently marked. And in Revelations those who do not repent, and through Yeshua rule over temptation, will also end up being marked.

Blessed be He Whose precious blood covers us. Blessed be He Whose presence enables us to endure the tests of refinement. Blessed be He Who has all the power and strength … to Him the glory forever and ever! Praise Yeshua HaMashiach … Ahmein!

Skip …. great way to start off the day! 🙂

Ins’t it that the act or action of tempting is based on the principle of resonance that permeates the whole Universe?? Without resonance the act or action of tempting is fruitless. What can we learn about our Teacher, Saviour and Lord, if we add this element to our analysis???

Shalom Ismael,

Good question …. my rudimentary two cents worth?

We learn that Yeshua is the astronomically large vibration produced in response to an external stimulus … Yeshua is the resonant wave permeating kol ha olam. All dimensions, all times, all spaces! 🙂

As Skip has pointed out on numerous occasions … when we obey we make an impact (Not what Yeshua did of course but an impact all the same). When we stave off temptation we send out a similar resonant wave! This is the physicality of obedience for those pondering such issues … and how could it not be so when Eloheinu is the MASTER of kol ha olam?

On a similar plane of thought … what kind of Universal resonance do we contemplate with Yeshua’s Resurrection? In the words of Carl from yesterday … WOW!

Following your argument I would like to add this verse and seek how this Yeshua’s words fit in this reasoning. The quote comes from Matthew 18:18, “Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Can we see where originates the action, ins’t it in earth. Jesus is acting upon our action. The action originates here in Earth. By whom??? Ins’t by us, believers in Yeshua’s name??

Drew

Ismael …. Yeshua acting upon our actions …. or us acting in and through Yeshua … the One Whose authority we invoke? There is a subtle but huge difference … yes?

I suppose the intrigue however (at least for me) lies in the relative interoperability between the dimensionally diverse planes … Heaven and Earth! At the same however I am not sure that this is the correct venue to explore this topic further.

What is most important in the end is that we praise Yeshua’s victory together! 🙂

for those who have not seen this, it is an eye-opener and another confirmation of “by Him all things consist.” (Colossians 1:17) Take a few minutes and view this if you will. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0shUs88TxA&feature=fvw Our G-d is Sovereign over the telescopic and the microscopic. The macro and the micro. LORD of all. The power of His cross? .. -tell me about it..-please.
