Understanding the Roman Empire in the First Century

The cultural and political context of Israel during the time of Yeshua cannot be appreciated without knowing about Rome.  The Roman Empire not only shaped the Mediterranean world, it formed our very concept of "civilization."  All Western empires since have used the Roman model.  Unless we comprehend the enormity of Rome's influence, we cannot fathom how the Church began and why it was so successful.
