Sufficient

“And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.””   II Corinthians 12:9 

Sufficient – This word (arkeo) is not used frequently in the New Testament.  The word can be used to express the idea that something is adequate for its purpose or it can be used to describe a state of mind that demonstrates contentment with circumstances.  When it describes an attitude toward life in response to God as in this verse, it evokes other promises where God vows to richly bestow the lives of His children with good and perfect gifts and with the hallmarks of godliness.  This attitude of contentment assumes a deep trust in the faithfulness of God.  It is the basis of peace and security that banishes anxiety about the future.  In this verse, God responds directly to Paul’s petition to have his difficulties removed.  God’s answer is the answer for every one of us in recovery.  It is not the removal of the curse that brings us to an attitude of contentment but rather the ability to trust God because we are addicts.  Our addiction is the pathway to grace.  For each of us, God was unnecessary until we found that our lives were riddled with discontent, sick with guilt and shame.  God promises that He and He alone is enough to satisfy all of our needs.   We can stop the frenzied search for life’s answers.  The answer is right here – God’s grace is enough.
