Light

“No longer will you have the sun for light by day, nor for brightness will the moon give you light; but you will have the Lord for an everlasting light, and your God for your glory”.   Isaiah 60:19

Light – Hebrew or.  Light is an important concept throughout the Bible.  It not only reminds readers of the work of God in creation (Let there be light), it also is used to recall the personal and impersonal forces that affect God and Man on both literal and metaphorical levels.  Light is used to describe the condition of a person’s inner serenity as seen on the face.  It is used to describe life and prosperity.  It is used to underscore the correct pathway provided by God for men.  Finally, it is used to speak of the character of God. 

Many of these Old Testament themes are found in the New Testament, for example, in the letters of John where God is said to be light without darkness and in John’s Gospel where Christ is described as the light of the world.  This verse from Isaiah talks about the fulfillment of human history, when God Himself will provide the light of life.  In this verse, we see that God’s light emanates from His glory and that this light will be given to us as our glory. 

Those of us in recovery have spent much of our lives in the shadows.  Our addictions isolated us to the dark recesses of secret lives.  But all of this ended when we surrendered to God.  His personal glory shines into every nook and cranny of our lives, illuminating our agony and bringing us into the healing light.  At last, we live in full exposure, unafraid of our pasts, open to a new day of illumination.  Whenever shadows begin to creep back into our lives, we can be confident that God wants to provide light to our path.  Stay illuminated today.
