The God of Weakness

“My grace is sufficient for you for my power is perfected in weakness”  2 Corinthians 12:9

The God of Weakness – John Timmer’s work, The God of Weakness, is one of those small books that changes everything.  “God’s power is at work in our weakness and our dying rather than in our strength and our living.”  Yes, it’s true.  God is not found in the high, the powerful, the prestigious, the vibrant, the plentiful and the pleasurable.  God is found in the weak, the sick, the poor, the perishing, the insane, the pitiful and the painful and finally in the dying.  Why?  Because God is the God of resurrection power.  He is found where resurrection is required, where survival depends on deliverance not on defense, where life must be breathed anew, not improved.

Where are you?

Are you moving so fast in the pace of life that you no longer hear the slow, unhurried step of the Master or the calm, quiet whisper of His voice?

Do you have so much that you are no longer free to be insufficient?

Are you an individual who no longer really belongs, standing alone against the tides of time?

Are you so consumed with your future that you no longer hear the God of the past?

Do you believe that the purpose of life is to become strong enough to live life independently?

Are you afraid to be broken?

Do you measure success on the scales of growth and influence, power and possession?

Would you be comfortable with glorious destitution?

Do you serve the God of weakness?

This hits home. I believe I heard The LORD tell me I’m self-reliant. I have to become the shulamite in Song of Solomon 8:5. I have to learn to lean and trust in HIM, if only I’d yield to the opportunities He sets before me.
