The Red Bird of Paradice (Alias Mexican Bird of Paradice), my favorite plant and flower. Very difficult to grow from seed, though in nature it is no problem.

Must be very hot in Phoenix this time of year; like an oven as I recall.
In medieval iconography, the phoenix is a symbol of the Resurrection of Christ, and equated with the Messiah.
In Egyptian mythology:
The phoenix is the most beautiful bird, more beautiful even than the peacock. It is colored like precious stones, and has a crested head and feet like fire. It lives among the cedars of Lebanon for 500 years, neither eating or drinking, being fed only by the wind. After this time it goes to the priest at Heliopolis and burns itself up.
Hi Skip, the photo is strikingly beautiful! Did you apply a filter from a program like Photoshop? How did you create this effect? It makes the photo look like a stunning painting.
The digital rendition was accomplished by using Photoshop CS3 plus Topaz filters (several) plus color management with Aperture 3.0
This is so much fun I sometimes just want to do it instead of writing (but don’t worry, I don’t intend to stop either)

Stunning.
