“Therefore, bring forth fruits worthy of repentance.” Matthew 3:8  NASB

Worthy – John the Baptizer cut no slack.  He spoke like a prophet right out of the Tanakh.  His message to the scribes and religious leaders was something they recognized.  Measure for measure.  Put your actions on the balance scales and see if they are inherently valuable.  See if they weigh the same as the repentance you claim.

John solved an enormous riddle for believers.  How do I know if the Spirit is operating in someone’s life?  How do I know if God has truly transformed the person?  How can I tell if that person has really been forgiven?  The answer is as clear as the position of the balance beam.  Measure what is produced.  Look for the fruit of repentance.  If you find it, you can be sure that God is active in that life.  If you don’t find it, you are free to disregard anything that person claims.  God may yet deal with that individual, but you are not to be fooled.

The Greek text uses the word axios, from the verb ago, “to weigh.”  Axios is a measure of value.  It calls to mind a picture of the balance scales.  One the one side is repentance, on the other the fruit of a man’s life.  They should be of equal weight.  Axios is a measure of  inherent value, not attributed value (timios).  The weight of my works must balance repentance.  The added value of the work of Yeshua and the grace of God does not enter the picture.  This is my load to carry and it needs to be equal to the weight of guilt removed from me.  Didn’t Yeshua instruct Simon, the Pharisee, about the same idea?  “Her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much, but he who is forgiven little, loves little.”[1]

My friend Anthony was rescued from a life of drugs and crime by the direct intervention of Yeshua.  Released from prison in spite of what should have been a life sentence, he decided that his freedom was his own.  He got a boat and went fishing.  While he was waiting for a bite, the Lord said to him, “Anthony, do you think I rescued you from prison so that you could go fishing?  What are you doing here?  Get about My business!”  Today Anthony is a great producer of the works of repentance, putting his love for the Lord above everything else in his life.  The balance scales.  Those who are forgiven much, from them much will be required.

You might ask yourself how much you value what you have been forgiven?  Does your forgiveness blossom into the fruit of compassion for others, joy, peace, long-suffering patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, self-control and steadfast reliability?  Repentance is a tree that produces fruits of many varieties, all of which reflect the character of the One who forgives.  If your works of repentance are missing some of the fruit, perhaps you haven’t taken real account of the depth of your forgiveness.

For those of us who have been forgiven much (or rescued from needing even more forgiveness by the grace of YHWH), this is good to let sink into our souls!

On a completely different note, I’m TOTALLY excited! I met a woman who sings with me on the worship team at my church who believes in Yeshua and YHWH outside of the whole replacement theology thing! She and her husband practice shabbat and celebrate the feasts and explore the true meaning of the Word, like Skip teaches here and many of you do here! YEAH! It’s so fabulous to find someone who doesn’t think I’m heretical and/or crazy! G-d is AWESOME!

Sorry, I just had to get it out! I’ve never met anyone who believes like me (except for you, Skip), especially not in my church! SWEET!

Oh, and G-d’s been so faithful lately as He blesses my family. We are far from “there”, but we’re digging in, fighting the enemy that has dogged our steps, and standing on the promise and passion of YHWH. G-d can do dumbfounding miracles and I, for one, can’t wait to see what He’ll do next!

Joy!

Hello all,
How I related to this message Skip. I learn from each of them, but with this one you could have been talking about my life with G-d. He has abundantly blessed me as I lived thru the deaths of three children, abortions, adoptions, and family addictions. Only the power from above carries me on and continues to give me the strength to carry on and truly believe that my life is in G-ds hands.
I am still trying to think of how to share all the testimonies, I guess the best way is to put the fingers to the keyboard and let the power direct me. May you continue to blessed with the insights from on High…

John the Baptizer was a man with a message: “Turn to G-d and change the way you think and act, because the kingdom of heaven is near.” (Matthew 3.2) Isn’t it miracle that today, after two millennia, this marvelous message of repentance (and renewal!) remains the main mandate for obdurate mankind today?

Hi Skip,

Tonight I felt a strong urge to write a letten to a brother who will not speak with me, although we are in the same church. What I teach is wrong, he thinks, so he’s done his utmost to silence me, with succes. I cannot teach in church any more, but to my surprise I discovered this to be a blessing in disguise. I now have time to spend with my wife and kids! Baruch attah, Adonai!

But now I want to get rid of this silence. I wrote a letter to my brother urging him to get in touch with me. But before posting it, I first wanted to read yesterday’s Today’s Word. Yesterday I was too busy to read it. There was some doubt about sending the letter in the back of my mind. Lord, is this the right track? I prayed and than started reading. There was my answer…. No, not the right track: go to your brother and talk with him! Reconciliate! And this is exactly what is needed.
Skip, never in my life did I get a message that was more clear! And never this fast! Thank you for giving it. God still speaks through His servants!

Skip – again on the very day I needed this insight God has provided the clarity and fulness of meaning that make future steps more secure and straight. God has used you and TW so many times to help me, and I rejoice that He has heard and aswered yet again. Susan
