Melanchthon Lives

“The whole law and the prophets hang on these two commandments.”  Matthew 22:40  (R. T. France)

Whole – How much of the Torah hangs on the two weightier commandments “love God” and “love your neighbor”?  Holos – all of it!  Agreed?  Now think about what this means.  If Yeshua is correct, then every one of the 613 Torah commandments, and all of the instructions that He Himself gives, can be interpreted through the two conjoining principles – love God and love your neighbor.  Don’t know why you should not eat shrimp?  Apply the principles.  Don’t know why you should return collateral to a man in desperate need?  Apply the principles.  Don’t understand why God cares about what you wear?  Apply the principles.  Every one of the 613 is either about loving God (obedience is better than sacrifice) or about loving God by expressing that love toward another.  In other words, the rest of the 611 are merely examples of how you apply these two.  They aren’t the limit of all you can do to express these two, but they are specific applications in all kinds of life situations.  These two great commandments are the reasons why we do all the rest of the 611.  It would be simply impossible to demonstrate that the only requirements Yeshua expected were these two.  They point to everything else.

Yesterday we read that R. T. France recognized the stupidity of claiming “all you need is love.”  But we need to notice one disturbing comment that France makes along the way.  He says that Matthew’s rendition of this statement by Yeshua includes the Greek term dianoia, not dynamis.  That means Matthew’s English translation says “with all your mind (your thinking)” not “with all your strength” (Hebrew me’od – resources).  Since the quotation comes from Deuteronomy 6:5, this change is striking.  Certainly Matthew knew that the Hebrew me’od meant resources, possessions or strength, not thinking.  France comments, “The resultant list [in Matthew] has a rather more ‘internal’ feel as compared with the more practical implications of loving God with one’s strength or possessions.”[1]  What would motivate Matthew to make this change?

I see two possibilities.  Since Matthew was originally written in Hebrew and later translated into Greek, we need to ask what Hebrew word might have been behind this Greek dianoia.  One suggestion is madda, a word phonetically close to me’odMadda eliminates the ambiguity involved in me’od (see our previous studies and this one).  It’s possible that Matthew changed the original Hebrew me’od in order to remove the ambiguity.  It’s possible, but I think, unlikely.  Matthew writes to an audience quite familiar with the Tanakh.  That audience would have understood the nuances of me’od.  There was no reason for Matthew to change the word to fit his audience (as is so popular among translators today).  I find it much more plausible that the second possibility is the correct one.  The translator of Matthew’s original Hebrew gospel altered the word.  It seems to me entirely unreasonable to suggest Matthew didn’t know the original Hebrew me’od and that Matthew intentionally changed the word Yeshua used (me’od).  It seems much more likely that a translator would stumble over me’od, a word that has no exact parallel in Greek, and that consequently, the translator substituted another Greek word that fit the Greek view of Man, namely body, mind and soul.  By the way, we continue to embrace this same alteration when we speak about loving God with all of our “heart, mind and soul.”  That is entirely Greek, not Hebrew.

Now let’s notice Melanchthon sitting in the corner.  Melanchthon’s view of faith amounted to inner confidence.  In his theology, believing was a “heart” action no longer directly connected to external evidence.  France only reiterates what Melanchthon and Luther started 500 years ago when they pushed faith into the inner sanctum of the mind.  When faith becomes an inner feeling, the need for the commandments goes out the window.  As long as I have love in my heart, does it really matter if I have a shrimp salad?

It would have mattered to Yeshua.  If we read these great two commandments in the context of first century Judaism, we must conclude that expressions of obedience and demonstrations of benevolence are vital and inextricable components of love.  Feelings in the heart are worthless without tangible evidence of transformed behavior.  Having a good feeling about God is about as useful as having an imaginary dollar in my pocket.  Neither makes much difference in the world.  Changing Matthew’s Hebrew from me’od to the Greek dianoia only initiated a long road to theological psychology, not Torah observance.  And we are the victims of this tragic fraud.  Now we have lots and lots of imaginary dollars which we believe will buy our way into heaven.

“Melchizedek Lives!”

Jan Carver

carl, what a thought – never entered my mind or soul – but had to comment on your revelation & short excitement… ♥

btw: i had to go look today for the 613 commandments of the Torah so here is the first thing/ONE i found in Judaism 101: A List of the 613 Mitzvot (Commandments) http://www.jewfaq.org/613.htm

• Jewish tradition teaches that there are 613 commandments
• This is the list of 613 identified by Rambam
• The order and organization is my own (statement by the author of the page/site)

i had to see 4 myself & was tiring of reading about the “613” without knowing what exactly they are… ♥

Jan, – and who “is” Melchizedek? – (Who was, and is, and is to come!) –

“He ever lives to make intercession for us..”

“theological psychology”
We see it all around us and it is hard to break through this ingrained concept no matter the camp you are raised in. I was “raised” in a religious environment that promoted feelings as substitution for what otherwise would have been cut and dried instruction from my Creator. As someone so close to the Holy Spirit, someone who manifested the “initial evidence” of having been baptized in the Spirit, my abilities to “discern” with my “inner witness” was what was used to determine whether something was “truth” and “right”. If what I read, heard or saw went along with MY beliefs, and the beliefs of those I agreed with, then MY compass was what I went by. If my spirit did not bear witness then it there must have been something wrong with what I was observing. Many people consider this a foregone conclusion in the church age we are currently in and this oftentimes leads to division and conflict. “Feelings” of condemnation may actually be the result of YWHW’s love for us and an attempt to get us back on the right path. BUT, we clutch what we are comfortable with and become hardened to anything that challenges us or may rub against our grain.

The renewal we need today is found in the Scriptures. We must be willing to accept the challenge of obeying before needing to offer the sacrifices required for disobedience. To obey is BETTER than sacrifice. Blessings to all.

“Feelings in the heart are worthless without tangible evidence of transformed behavior.” YES, LORD JESUS THIS IS WHAT WE ALL LOOK 4 IN REPENTANCE… ♥

“Having a good feeling about God is about as useful as having an imaginary dollar in my pocket. Neither makes much difference in the world. Changing Matthew’s Hebrew from me’od to the Greek dianoia only initiated a long road to theological psychology, not Torah observance.”

“And we are the victims of this tragic fraud. Now we have lots and lots of imaginary dollars which we believe will buy our way into heaven.” I DETEST FRAUD OR THE FRAUDULENT OR BEING DEFRAUDED BUT AGAIN AS MARY STATES/TYPES ABOVE: ““Feelings” of condemnation may actually be the result of YWHW’s love for us and an attempt to get us back on the right path. BUT, we clutch what we are comfortable with and become hardened to anything that challenges us or may rub against our grain.”~~~Mary AH, TO REMAIN TEACHABLE IS THE OBEDIENCE & THE SACRIFICE OF OUR FEELINGS – TO CLING TO “IT IS WRITTEN” ABOVE ALL… ♥

2,443,943 times Kind of Blue by Miles Davis had been heard by those who love his music

He died as I recall from an overdose of Heroin

You can hear the Love in his music; but you cannot hear the Fear, except as pain

IMO His music transforms the fear into something good, true, and beautiful (Love)

However, for Miles Davis, Love was a “marriage” of Heaven and Hell

For some, the love of God and the fear of God is a terrifying experience

BTW I was going to pick up my daughter the other day and the offramp is “Whisman”

For years the word had always stuck in my mind, I wondered if it were a veiled reference to Walt Whitman

Or Wiseman

Then it Dawned on Me; Hmmm Jewish Humor, WH (God) is Man, like the sign “Om Sai” by my House

Hi Jan,
I am reminded of a question that nags me constantly as I read through the iconic Beatles’ song lyrics you posted above. The world has used and totally abused this word “love”. We have even attempted to redeem the misuse of the word recently by saying love is a choice, love is what you do, love is…..so many ideas of love and so little doing love according to the Scriptures. But…OK!! what does all that MEAN and what does it look like?!? I know what I think it FEELS like, but what makes ME feel good may not make your boat float so right. AND doing unto others as we would have them do unto us…I am skeptical about that as well. Many want to remain in darkness and cling to their beliefs that are anti full gospel. By “full gospel” I refer to the entirety of the Bible with NO division.

Some of us seem to think we can have it both/any kinda ways. I don’t think that will work, but I do agree with you that a teachable spirit is what the Father looks for when He sees us struggling to know Him and waiting upon Him.

Our families and homes are disintegrating due to the awkward definitions of love. Many churches’ lights are being snuffed out because they have forsaken a love of the Truth for a counterfeit gospel and restructuring worship. Oddly enough, some churches wear this fading flame as a badge of honor, thinking they are so right, and the world is so corrupt and fallen that they want nothing to do with the church. Solid Biblical definition is what is needed after all the years of divisive doctrine that has sown the confusion and discord in the body of Christ.

Without the boundaries you mentioned above, the definition/instructions of YHWH, we are building upon the idols that others created in times past by redefining what “thus saith the LORD”.

carl roberts

Yes Mary, let us clearly define love. “This is love: not that we loved G-d, but that He loved us and sent His Son (Malachi,-Messiah, the Messenger and the Message) as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” -and not for our sins only, but for the sins of the whole world.
If we wish to view love in all it’s superior splendor, we need go no where else but to the cross of the Chosen ONE. If love may be measured by humility and sacrifice, (and it may)- then let us recognize, review and remember our Redeemer and the price He paid for us. Ten lepers were cleansed, -one returned to give thanks. I am one of the ten. I will bow the knee, consciously, continually and conspicuously in the presence of the Holy ONE- today, to offer myself, a living sacrifice, unto my Elohim, my Creator who humbled Himself and became the Created, the Torah made flesh and lived among us to show us (all) how to love. In His words: “follow Me.”
YHWH demonstrated His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, the Messiah (G-d Incarnate) died for us. Apart from Calvary we will never know love. It is through the cross and the blood of the cross that we, sinful creatures, (yes, we all have sinned and fallen short of the mark) may enter into a new blood-covenant relationship with our Maker.
Mary, (and all who read these my words) I gladly, freely, fully and finally confess- Christ died for me, for I too have sinned and am no longer worthy to be called the son of my Father. I have come to the cross of Christ and have been broken by the sight of it. My LORD, my ADONAI, bared His back to the whip and gave His head to the crown of thorns, willingly, knowingly to pay for, in full- my sin debt. With His final (holy) Breath these were His words to me: “paid in full”. It has been accomplished. My salvation. My redemtion, My deliverance.- My ADONAI.
But wait..- there’s more. (Always more..) For the ONE who died, no longer remains in the borrowed tomb. No, no and (praise G-d!)- no. Who is (and remains) the Victorious ONE? Who, I’m asking all.. has (has) conquered death, sin and the grave? Who has (has) defeated by one offering forever, (the offering of Himself) hasatan? He did. It has been fully accomplished.- But wait.. -there’s more! (always more..)
Free from the penalty of sin (death). Death, once a dread, is now a joy! (what do the scriptures say?)- “to die is gain!” (is this worth repeating?)- “to die is gain.” Free from the penalty of sin. No more separation. (may I?- Hallelujah!) But wait.. -there’s more!- always more..
Free from the power of sin. Free from sin’s authority. Sin is no longer my master. I (now) have power (authority) over sin. I may choose to serve another Master. I see sin for what it is- and if I may be allowed to say- sin ain’t pretty. Sin is stupid, and yes, sin is a form of insanity. Sin muddles the mind and separates us from G-d and us from each other. Sin splinters shalom. We will never know shalom (wholeness) apart from the Savior. We may know happiness if our happenstance “happens” to be good, but joy (constant abiding joy) remains with us -even in the ‘night seasons’ of the soul. The joy of the LORD is our strength. This joy is what caused Paul and Silas to sing and give praise to ADONAI at midnight, sitting, bound hand and feet, within the confines of a smelly Roman prison. And when they gave praise to ADONAI, (the sacrifice of praise) not because of their circumstances or situation but because they knew their G-d, the G-d who sees, -the ever living Compassionate ONE, the G-d of Deliverance. The consequence of their choice (yes, love is a choice) to praise? – The prison bars were opened. But because of love (once again)- they remained where their Sovereign Savior had placed them. Again..- the consequences of their choice to remain? the salvation (deliverance) of many..- “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” and what was the answer they gave to this man? (what do the scriptures say?) But wait..- there’s more..- always more!)
We will be (forever) free from the presence of sin. Heaven is forever “sin-free”. G-d is infinitely holy and heaven is a place of purity. Not one spot, not one blemish, – totally pure. Heaven is a prepared place for a prepared people. Us, -the Bride of Christ. The Marriage Supper of the Lamb is yet to be. Am I looking forward to this? We (all) have been issued an invitation. “Go out into the highways and hedges and compel them to come in..” “Go ye therefore into all nations..” The Gospel (the good news) is spelled “go..”
He that spared not His own Son, (Abraham gave his own son also..) but delivered Him (the Son) up for us all..- how shall He not -with Him- also freely give us all things? (Romans 8.32) It is the Gift that keeps on giving! – Amazing Love, -amazing Grace.

Mary

“YHWH demonstrated His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, the Messiah (G-d Incarnate) died for us.”

Hi Carl,
Yes, this is such an awesome reminder of the action YHWH puts behind His “thoughts” toward us. Surely He is kind and compassionate. If He were to act according to His feelings, wouldn’t most of us be toast! And He would, as the Sovereign, be within His right. Shall we, as believers, as imitators follow His lead?

Isn’t it also interesting, how in the example you cited concerning Paul and Silas’ prison break, how they “went” by not leaving where they were? Now if that isn’t a picture of “go”-ing for some of us to see!! Kind of puts another view on “go”ing, doesn’t it?

Grace and blessing to you and yours.

Mary

“Love is the practical expression of mutual obligation created within a community. To love others is to act in ways that honor them as God’s image in the world.”

Agreed. I would add that if only we quit looking for others to measure up to OUR standards, will we be able to see them as worthy of honor simply because they are also YHWH’s creation. He says to welcome foreigners with kindness, because we were once aliens ourselves. Could this be why YHWH reminds us to be kind to them as He is kind to us; there should be a connection there.

Far too often, we elevate ourselves by demonstrating OUR love in ways that actually makes US feel good. Having created each of us uniquely equipped with varying degrees and dominance of emotions, G-d knew that the meekness of obedience to His Word would supercede emotive intent, in displaying love. As He charged Adam to take care/authority of his surroundings, so He has also charged us to show love as He loves.

This must begin in our families first. Gentleness and kindness. Wow…now THAT can be a challenge! Wish I had taken the challenge sooner. Glad someone has thrown the gauntlet down. The “rose in the fisted glove”?

carl roberts

All of YHWH’s “thou shalt nots” are “don’t hurt yourself.”

All of YHWH’s “thou shalts” are “help yourself to happiness..”

Living “by the Book”- We have His instructions..- “read and follow label directions..”- “Whatever He says unto you.. “-do it.”

ask..- (should we ask?) seek.. (should we seek?..) knock.. (should we knock?) – and it shall be opened unto you..

Thank you, Carl. That is good. I am reposting your comment!
