“But you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments; and they will walk with Me in white, for they are worthy.” Revelation 3:4 NASB
Soiled – As you may have noticed, I rarely comment on verses from the apocalypse of John. The reason is simple. Apocalyptic literature is a genre filled with deliberately opaque symbols, intended to be applicable to many different circumstances. It is literature designed to provide hope, not timetables. Most Christians do not realize that there are literally thousands of pages of apocalyptic writings from the same period as the Book of Revelation. Such literature was common during the last days of the first century. Christian teaching usually ignores these facts in its attempt to press the symbols into contemporary history. This has been happening for more than a thousand years. Each new generation has believers who are convinced that the writings of John’s vision are about their culture. The whole exegetical project surrounding this nonsense makes me steer clear of Revelation, in spite of the fact that it obviously played an important role in the lives of believers during the time it was written.
But sometimes a verse in Revelation deserves comment from an Hebraic perspective.
When John’s vision of the speech of the Anointed One includes a statement about soiled garments, we need to look closely at the implications of such words. Since John writes from an Hebraic point of view, and his work is filled to the brim with symbolic references to the Tanakh and to Jewish practices in the first century, perhaps it is helpful to use this background to examine the meaning of “soiled garments.” The Greek verb is moluno (to defile, to smear with mud or filth – Hebrew tame’). Scholars suggest that this word might have a root in the Greek word for black ink. But we don’t have to look too far to understand what it would mean in Hebrew. To have defiled garments means that I cannot participate in worship at the Temple. Unlike Christian commentary explanations, defilement does not necessarily mean moral sins. In Hebraic thought, there are two kinds of defilement: moral and ritual. Certainly moral sins defile, but such defilement is often not visible to anyone but God. However, some kinds of ritual defilement are physically obvious. Menstruation is one such defilement. It is not sinful, but it is ritual defilement nonetheless. Physical blemishes can defile. Contact with the dead defiles. Contact with certain bodily fluids defiles. Giving birth defiles. Obviously, none of these normal human processes are sins. To suggest that this statement in John’s vision is concerned with moral impurity such as adultery and idolatry is to ignore that obvious connection between outward physical impurity and worship.
Why should we pay any attention to this relatively obscure text? Because once we realize that it includes ritual purity (and perhaps only ritual impurity), we must acknowledge that at the time it was written ritual purity still played a role in the life of the community. Since Revelation was written after the destruction of the Temple, references to ritual purity must mean that the believing community still practiced Torah observance. Why else would they be concerned about ritual purity? Why else would the statement contain a reference to making themselves “worthy?” Ritual purity is something I do, not something that is granted to me. John’s vision of the Lord’s proclamation indicates that worship still included concern with Jewish ritual practice. The community was still expected to walk in a certain way, a way revealed to Moses. From beginning to end, the message of the Tanakh hasn’t changed. It’s still about a way of life, a code of conduct, an adoption of a God-given constitution.

Dearly Beloveds in Moshiach. We are living in interesting and wonderful times. The good news is that we are loved with our Father’s everlasting love. He is in deed reaching out to you and me at this time. Take up your cross and follow the Good Sheperd. He knows your name. Just follow Him. He will connect you to the pure of heart who will help you find your way back to His Fatherheart. I am also a parent. I love my sons unconditionally no matter what. How much more does our Heavenly Father love us Beloveds? All we have to do is accept this love and be obedient to follow our Good Sheperd. One day at a time. Overcome the evil/obstacles by doing good deeds. Give without wanting anything in return but the glory of our Father and King. Do not judge anyone that you meet on the way. Just love him/her back to Father’s heart. Nobody walking the earth right now can pick up a stone and cast it to anybody else. All are struggeling with our human condition. We are suffering as a whole just as we are learning as a whole. Yes, we have hope. His knowledge will fill the earth as the waters cover the sea. It will be done. Be patient with those you think are weaker in faith. Never have a proud heart. Live humbly before our Father and fellow travellers. His love covers a multitude of sins – yours and mine. Nobody earned or deserves salvation. It is a gift to be treasured until we see our Bridegroom coming on the clouds. He asked me this question recently – will you now give up your agenda and replace it with Mine. I said yes. What is your decision today? Are you busy with His agenda or your own? Are you sure? Love Him today with all of your heart, mind and strength. Listen and hear His voice and it will be well with your souls.
Amen Christina- (to all of the above!).
Is our Bible the book of the month or the Book of the ages?
to whom is this Book written? is it for “whosoever will?” If so,- then I would qualify.
Are we saying -“that was then- this is now?”- then our Bible is nothing more than another history book. One we could read from a safe distance and say to ourselves, -“the past is prologue..”
Do we read G-d’s inspired word and recognize and realize- “every word of G-d is pure?” Does “man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of YHWH” – Does the whole counsel of G-d still apply to us enlightened, empowered, and educated fools today?
Who reads who? Do we read our Bible or does our Bible read us? (the answer is Yes and amen.)
The Unveiling. (Another) unveiling of Jesus (the Christ) by John. More good news. The gospel according to John. – the Story- His-Story (the neverending story!) continues.. Calvary is not the end but only the beginning.. In the blessed book of Revelation we can “get a glimpse of glory.” Of things yet to be..
Do I understand all that I know? (draw dear to me so I may laugh on your lapel!) one giant “hah!”- No way Jose’- I cannot explain cherry pie or what goes on within one square inch of black soil- how am I going to know what the future holds?- I don’t, -neither do you or you or you. But G-d does and He has given unto us a “glimpse” a peek under the covers of ‘things’ yet to be.
This I can say without stutter or stammer..- there is (now) a Lamb seated upon His throne..
I may also say with blessed assurance..- “every knee (Hebrew, Greek, Swahili, Arab, Republican- every knee will bow.”
When that day comes- I will already be on my knees – for I am putting into practice now the discipline of prayer for the veil of the temple (the temple of His flesh) has been torn and we (who have been cleansed) have access to the very heart of our Father. “Enter in..”
His standing invitation: “Come unto Me..”
and (lo and behold..) verse 4 is followed by verse 5 (for the rest of the story..)
~ The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before His angels ~
and who are these who are clothed in white garments?
Let’s ask John. ~ Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes–who are they, and where did they come from?” I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb ~ (Revelation 7.13,14)
Doesn’t Revelation speak of a FINAL cleansing? A permanent end to sin?
Is Revelation ONLY an allegory for two ever-present realities on earth?
There are endless debates over what “The Mark” or “The Beast” are — and most are very tiresome. But the alternative path (IMHO), often leads to the belief that heaven and hell are both currently here on earth. And while this is true to a minor degree; that believers experience tastes of heaven, and the ‘lost’ have already ceased to exist as humans (in many ways) — we do not need relegate all of Revelation to the past or present. There is an important future component in the book.
i really don’t think those that are called according to HIS purpose(s) & love HIM & keep HIS commands are any different than those who followed Torah then & now.
we don’t go about doing & wanting to sin; like watching porn, fornicating, being adulterous, back biting, gossiping, lying, cheating others, etc. (we all know the list) – the big & little sins – mainly because we just don’t want to nor find it pleasurable to do so because we have a new nature in HIM. we don’t want to because HE doesn’t & doesn’t want us to participate in sinful things. we love HIM to much & our hearts are changed they no longer desire the things of this world but we desire what HE desires & desires for us.

From beginning to end, the message of the Tanakh hasn’t changed. ***It’s still about a way of life, a code of conduct, an adoption of a God-given constitution.”*** AND IT IS STILL THIS WAY FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM & OBEY HIS COMMANDS… ♥
