Inside Job

A little leaven leavens the whole lump.  Galatians 5:9  ESV

Leaven – When the Greek word zyme is used in Matthew 16:6 or 1 Corinthians 5:6, no one has any doubt about the application of the proverbial saying to the context.  In both cases, the metaphor of leaven means some small thing that is introduced into the group that changes the whole.  But in order for the “leaven” to have its effect, it must be within the large substance.  Bread does not rise if the leaven is left on the nearby shelf.

If we apply this obvious element of the metaphorical use of leaven to the Galatian believers, then it seems fairly clear that the influencers whom Paul references must be within the Galatian body.  They would not have any effect on the believers in Galatia if they were simply outsiders proposing alternative rituals and theological understanding.  As outsiders, they could be easily dismissed or ignored.  Paul’s use of the metaphor of leaven suggests that these influencers are a part of the body of believers and that if the remaining believers follow their instructions, the whole group will be led astray.  Paul’s concern over the detrimental influence of these people is based on the fact that they are already incorporated into the Galatian assembly, and, in fact, have already turned some Gentile believers in their direction.  Paul is not fighting against foreign invaders.  He is fighting against a fifth column force.  What is the point of a leaven metaphor if the threat is not internal?

Paul’s use of the leaven metaphor also implies that the Galatian body does not perceive this leavening force as harmful or threatening.  Throughout Galatians Paul insists that this is a mistaken perception; that the believers in Galatia must see these suggestions of these influencers for what they are – a defection from the freedom granted in Christ.  But it seems abundantly clear that the Galatians do not see this threat.  In fact, it seems quite the opposite – that the pathway proposed by these men is beneficial and necessary.  Why would they think so if Paul has already instructed them otherwise (this is Paul’s claim)?  The answer is that the recipients of Paul’s (circular) letter to this particular kind of believer throughout Galatia were being persuaded by other members of the same congregations to comply with norms and standards in order to be recognized by these other members as full citizens of the Kingdom.  To be a citizen of the Kingdom was a worthy goal, therefore, there was significant appeal to the proposal.  But it happens that one of the steps required by these others was circumcision.  That means that the influencers are suggesting that in order to be full members in God’s house males must meet the circumcision requirement.  In other words, they must first become Jewish since circumcision was a crucial step in proselyte Judaism.  A Gentile who wanted full membership and access to the status and privileges granted full members was being instructed to follow the pathway of proselytes.

Paul strenuously objects!  In Paul’s view, full status as a member of the household of God is granted by God alone through His Son, Yeshua.  No additional steps are necessary!  Therefore, if believers accept the suggestions of the inside fifth column proponents, they will in effect be denying that God alone granted them full membership status.  If they do this, they will be denying what Yeshua died to establish – that there is no difference between Jew and Gentile within the Kingdom.  If Gentile believers accept these proposals, they will have introduced leaven into the bread, and the whole loaf will soon be changed.

Notice that there is no suggestion that the leaven is the Law!  It is not the Law that is the crux of this issue.  It is the same problem faced by the Jerusalem council and by Paul in other locations.  “How do Gentiles become members of the group?”  Paul answers, “By God’s election.”  Circumcision as an act of obedience for one who already follows is not an initiation rite.  There are no initiation rites in the new age of the Messiah.  But that does not entail that the Law has been abandoned.  It only means that stipulations of the Law are not entrance requirements.

It seems to me that the Church certainly understood half of what Paul said.  I do not have to be circumcised in order for God to adopt me.  That much we understand.  But the Church missed the other crucial element.  Even though there are no initiation requirements, there are post-initiation expectations.  I am expected to live according to a code of conduct so that I might demonstrate to the world that my life has been changed by the hand of God.  The Church threw out the baby with the bath water – and ever since it has attempted to build its own standards for conduct, with dismal results.

It might be worth asking yourself, “How much leaven do we have in our assembly?”  “How much have we changed the standards to accommodate the leaven instead of throwing out the leaven but keeping the unleavened bread?”  The threat is not the attack of the world.  It is the subtle alteration from inside for “good” reasons.

“There are no initiation rites in the new age of the Messiah.”

As I was reading this, I kept on thinking about all the congregations or churches I’ve been part off. All those congregations had some or other “initiation rite” one had to go through before one could become a member of that specific congregation. In genera,l the “initiation rite” constituted taking one or two short courses that explained the specific congregation’s basic doctrinal and theological understanding and then a “initiation ceremony” where you had to make/read a pledge or promise before the rest of the congregation. And then you receive a “members certificate”. I just kept on wondering, how much different (in principle) are those “initiation rites” found in modern day churches than what Paul argued against in Galatia?

On a completely different note… “I am expected to live according to a code of conduct so that I might demonstrate to the world that my life has been changed by the hand of God…” I just finished writing a paper on spiritual and moral formation for a Theological Ethics class. I just can’t help but be amazed at how amazing God’s design for holy living is. I had to read many books on the subject, and many of the authors had wonderful insights. But, whatever the “tools” they suggested – whether it be fasting, praying, study, corporate worship, etc. – I just kept on thinking, if you live according to God’s design, all those “tools” are naturally part of the yearly spiritual journey God takes us through when you follow His appointed times and live according to His commandments. Praise His mighty Name!

SAILING ACTS
Following Paul’s incredible journey of change

Apparently, Paul’s third stop was in Rhodes and if you click on the url above it should take you

To a map of Paul’s route through the “Dominions” in that area

I mention Rhodes because when I was travelling around with my friends David and Dominic

Many years ago, our destination was Rhodes

Paul’s 4th stop was in Meletus and I first came across the town of Meletus some years ago

When I was reading a lot of work by an MD and professor at Yale named Edward F Edinger

Milette is the name of a town that is considered by some to be “the prettiest place in Canada”

It was also the name of my coworker at that time who was 44 years old

My wife’s best friend from high school was visiting us at that time

Her name was Miriam and she was 44 years old at that time

Miriam is an Indian and my wife is Chinese

And they were both educated in English schools in Malaysia (Kuala Lumper)

I met Miriam and her husband many years ago in Malaysia

I was very surprised at the time, because Miriam was very different than her husband Andrew

And Andrew was very much like my wife

My coworker Milette also had a husband named Andrew

Milette is a Filipina but if you saw her with Miriam you would say they were two “peas in a pod”

The day after Miriam and Andrew arrived at our house, I went to work in the morning

And our manager. the VP of Marketing, announced the birth of his 1st child

The name of his baby was Andrew Michael Taft

“Terry” has a letter written by a man who used to have no spiritual interest. He lived next door to a Christian, and they had a casual friendship. Quite suddenly and unexpectedly, the non-Christian’s died.

Here’s part of a letter he wrote afterward:

I was in total despair. I went through the funeral preparations and the service like I was in a trance. And after the service I went to the path along the river and walked all night. But I did not walk alone. My neighbor — afraid for me, I guess — stayed with me all night.
He did not speak; he did not even walk beside me. He just followed me. When the sun finally arose over the river, he came over to me and said, “Let’s go get some breakfast.”
I go to church now. My neighbor’s church. Anything that can produce the kind of caring and love my neighbor showed me is something I want to find out more about. I want to be like that. I want to give love and be loved like that for the rest of my life.

Long time ago, an expert in the law tried to test Yeshua by asking Him to declare what the greatest commandment in the Law of Moses. In one masterful statement, Yeshua condensed the entire law that God had given Moses into this memorable explanation: “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets”

Pam

On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets”

Good morning cuz,

A dear elder in one of the congregations we attend explained something to us last year that made Torah observance so meaningful. This congregation has a Torah scroll. We already knew that the scroll is referred to as the tree of life and that it is made of animal skins wrapped hand written letter for letter and that the top of the letters touch the bottom side of the line rather than resting on the top of the line and several other interesting facts. What he shared with us is that the almost invisible but permanent fine lines on the scrolls are carved into the skins with a thorn. This made the scripture “On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets” come alive like never before.

Dorothy

Pam, that is interesting and beautiful! I certainly enjoyed reading that.

You have given me a good subject for study today and no day would be complete without questions arising like a flock of birds lifting into the morning skies. The old people say to hold on to youth, keep wondering, keep asking questions. (I have found that you only get old with a puzzled look on your face, Lol)

So if the Tree of Life in the Garden is the Torah, and also in heaven, –if the Center of Heaven is the law, where does that leave Yeshua?
Following that line of reasoning, would we have to say God drove them out and guarded the path to the Torah?… and prevented Adam and Havva/Eve from access to it?

[that flock has flown away out of sight now, and I wish to share some notes I made]

In Proverbs a number of things are referred to as ‘a tree of life’ (wisdom (3:15), the fruit of the righteous (11:30), desire fulfilled (13:12), and a soothing tongue (15:4) The Tree of Life in these references symbolises that which brings joy and healing to people.

After the first people sinned, God closed the way to the Tree of Life lest they be temped by satan to circumvent God’s punishment of having to die, –but in fact, he wished to finish their state of misery by living forever in a state of sin and separation from God. But YAY! God steps in and interrupts satan’s plans and satan rages because he is unable to thwart God. That has been going on for a long time and satan is madder and madder all the time, –as every headline testifies!

Praise God for His better plan — instead of them and us living in sin forever — God’s plan is redemption in Jesus Christ with a new heavens and new earth and no more curse.

To cover Adam and Eve, God didn’t use the Tree of Life or the law, — shed blood was needed and so an innocent animal died. (maybe a lamb)

Christ is sometimes signified as the tree of life, Prov. 3:18, Rev. 2:7 He is not only the author of natural and spiritual life, but The Giver of eternal life; the promise of it is in Him, and the blessing itself; He has made way (He IS the way the truth the life) thru His obedience, sufferings, and death, and is the way unto it; it is in His gift, and He bestows it on all his people, and the joy of eternity will be in the enjoyment of Him.

The Tree of Life in the midst of the garden well agrees with Him Who is in the midst of His church and people now, Rev 1:13, 2:7 stands open, is in sight, and is accessible to them all now, whosoever will may come to Him, and partake of the fruits and blessings of His grace, which are constant and durable, and Who will be seen and enjoyed by all throughout eternity.

Moses, when he saw the burning bush said, “I must turn aside to see….” [Ex. 3.3]

*side note: Every type of research I have done points to the type of plant being a THORN bush that bears a red berry.

“The Tree of Life in the midst of the garden well agrees with Him Who is in the midst of His church and people now, Rev 1:13, 2:7 stands open, is in sight, and is accessible to them all now”

Hi Dorothy,

If I were to say that the sentence above could be read on several levels, it would probably not shock anyone

But if I were to say that “His church” was later designed on orders from Constantine

It might raise some eyebrows

As I understand it, Daat (Knowledge) is the central state of unity of the 10 Sephirot

The 10 Sephirot are also referred to as the “Tree of Life”

In the late 90’s I came across a book by Daniel Matt called “The Essential Kabbalah”

And around that time, David, Dominic and I traveled from Paris to Rome to Greece and Rhodes

David and I each had a copy of Richard Saul Wurman’s “Rome Access”

On page 10, there is a floor plan of St Peter’s Basilica

(At this point a picture would be worth 1000 words)

The foundation of the architectural design is essentially a cross on a square

In the center of the cross, you have the papal alter and the tomb of St Peter

In the upper left hand corner of the “quadrant” you have the “Chapel of the Column”

In the upper right hand corner of the “quadrant” you have the “Chapel of St Michael”

At the top of the “cross” in the center you have the “Apse”

In the Kabbalah, the structure of the Tree of Life is essentially the same, but a bit more complicated

At the top of the cross in the center you have the keter or “crown”

In the upper left hand corner of the “quadrant” you have binah or understanding

In the upper right hand corner of the “quadrant” you have chakmah or wisdom

I could go on and on and on, but it would become very tedious

My point is that the planners of the design, Bramante and Michelangelo

Of this great Catholic Cathedral

Must have been very familiar with the mystical aspects of the Hebrew worldview

Speaking of quadrants and crosses

Back in the late seventies, and please keep Monty Python in mind

I developed a structural theory of the genre of satire based on the so called

Semantic Rectangle (which is now known as the Semiotic Square)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semiotic_square

And showed how it could be applied to satiric literature in different forms

From classical Roman satire, to Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, to the post-modern

Naked Lunch

The expert on satire at UCSD, Robert C. Elliott, The Power of Satire: Magic, Ritual, Art, 1960. Princeton University Press

Was a wonderful man who was responsible for that part of my written exams

In summary of that part of my exams he said:

“Michael, I understand what you are doing and think it works

But why do you want find this logical structure (crosses in squares)

In all works of satire?”

I said I don’t know, I just see it

Now I see it in the lower left hand corner of my computer screen

The Microsoft Windows logo, which contains the 4 “True Colors”

They tell me I’m a green

Michael

When I started working at a Cisco Systems before the turn of the century

I came across another permutation of this structure, which was referred to as

The Magic Quadrant

It is used in the world of High Technology to distinguish the “best of the best”

When it comes to companies with the most advanced technologies

They refer to this “cross in a rectangle” as the “Magic Quadrant”

And it is maintained by the very prestigious “Gartner Group”

The point of the game is to get your company as high as you can

In the upper right hand corner of the “Magic Quadrant”

Because the upper right hand corner is where the Visionary Leaders reside

The Visionary Leaders who not only can see and design what to do

They can “execute” their plan better than their competitors

As well
