Hitting the Nail on the Head

having cancelled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us and which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.  Colossians 2:14  NASB

Nailed it – In the June 18,2011 edition of Today’s Word, we examined this verse and discovered that what was nailed to the cross was the cheirographon, the Greek word for a certificate of debt, that is, an IOU.  We pointed out that there is no justification for claiming that the law behind the certificate was removed.  Just because my traffic ticket is voided does not mean that the law establishing the case for the ticket is void.  Torah applies.  The penalty produced by Torah disobedience does not apply. Those who read this verse in the NIV will be lead astray by the NIV’s deliberate translation supporting replacement theology.  In my opinion, God will hold these translators responsible for such blatant manipulation of the words.

But there is another aspect of this verse that needs to be elaborated.  Sometimes exegetes argue that this verse supports the claim that Jesus died on the cross for the forgiveness of sin.  They interpret “it” (“having nailed it”) as “sin.”  But this is also unwarranted.  “It” is the certificate of debt.  The Greek text makes this abundantly clear.  What did the certificate of debt imply?  Well, what is the penalty for disobedience?  Death!  When Yeshua nailed the certificate to the cross, He removed the penalty!  The penalty is not our sins.  It is death.  The cross is the place of death, both literally and figuratively.  On it God reversed the direction of the universe.  God overcame death by death – the death of His blameless Son who knew no certificate of debt.

Try reading the verse with this in mind.  The certificate of debt is the direct result of disobedience.  In fact, possessing a cheirographon implies the existence of a valid standard – a law.  There can be no debt if there is no standard of payment.  How did the certificate arise?  Paul tells us that it came into existence because of decrees leveled against us.  That is exactly what happens when we disobey the law.  We create a situation where we owe.  We owe because the law applies and in its application it creates the need for payment.  Yeshua removes the payment required by substituting Himself.  But this does not imply that the cross is the place of substitution.  What Paul says about the cross in this verse is that it is the place of cancellation of the penalty.  Paul distinguishes the payment from the penalty.  Atonement is the means of forgiveness.  Removing the penalty of death is the sign of victory over defilement.  In other words, this is a two-step process, both steps intimately connected.  First atonement is accomplished, clearing the way for the defilement to be eliminated.  Yeshua’s sacrifice provides the means by which God re-establishes relationship.  This applies in Genesis 3:21 just as much as it applies today.  But secondly, the defilement created by death itself must be overcome.  The creation must be cleansed.  This is accomplished by the resurrection from the dead of one who carried no penalty.  Death is defeated in an unjustified death.  The nails are the instruments of life.

Perhaps we have been led astray by 1800 years of self-justifying theology.  Perhaps it’s time to read Paul as a Jew.

Nailed to the Cross

Let us today, and together – “nail it.”

Yes, it is a matter of debt. What do we owe – and to Whom?

Let us begin with sin. What is sin? Sin is (simply) the transgression (or trespass) of the Law. But your Honor, I didn’t know the speed limit was 35. The law sir (or m’am) has been established, written in stone, now upon tablets of flesh, and will abide forever. The Jews require a sign? The signs have been posted. 35mph.
Of much more muscle or weight or importance are the Ten “words” given unto Moses upon the mount. The ten commandments, (not suggestions!) of YHWH. In reduced form.. 1) You shall… and 2) You shall not..
Things to do and things not to do. Here are the commandments of YHWH- do these things and live!
But Houston, (and everywhere else, we do have a problem). Now please, do remember, the Law of the LORD is perfect! There is, (please remember) NOTHING at all “wrong” with the Law of the LORD, the Torah of YHWH! The Law of the LORD is perfect,- BUT (always sumpthin’)- on rthe other hand, we (none of US) are!
For (what?) ALL have sinned.. The Jew? sinner. The Gentile? sinner. Adam? sinner. Moses? sinner “Father” Abraham? sinner. Friend, -(are you listening?)- All have sinned. Every man- everywhere, from Adam forward- all have sinned. Mr. Rabbi,- ~ there are none righteous- no, not one. ~ Solomon, – all have sinned – there is a perfect Law, BUT- there are no perfect people!
Yes, Houston (and all other cities) we do have a problem. God is holy. God is thrice holy. And, as for us? We are not. Sinners, transgressors of the perfect Law of our Elohim- are we. Every last one of us- (are you listening? have sinned or transgressed God’s standard of perfection.
The purpose of God’s perfect Law? ~ to show (to reveal) that the entire world is guilty before God ~
(Romans 3.19) Just the facts, m’am..- We (as in all of us) are sinners -in need of a Savior.
Now, enough of the bad news- is there any hope? (Cartwheels and handsprings) YES!! What is the gospel (Good News!!) of The Messiah? Have we yet established our guilt before God? ~ What do the scriptures say? ~ The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them ~ (Ezekiel 18.20)
Personal responsibility is Biblical! Friend, ~each one of us will give an account of himself to God! ~ (Romans 14.12)- and we (each of us) have been given much! Revelation carries with it the weight of responsibility!
Has the fact of sin been thoroughly established? The verdict? Guilty. ~ All have sinned..~ “all, y’all..”
And the Penalty for sin? Ask Adam. Paradise Lost. Ask Moses. “No crossing over into Canaan (the land of promise) for you.” Ask the two fellas that attempted to do what “they thought” was a good thing and reached out to steady the ark of the covenant as it was about to fall. Their penalty? (Does this seem “a bit harsh” to you?) Death. When it comes to sin, “God don’t play.” And “sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay and cost you more than you want to pay.”
~ the wages (penalty? consequence?) of sin is death ~. The Penalty (or payment) for sin? Death (or separation). Separation from Life and from Light and from Love. The cold, hard truth: There will be “hell to pay..”
The fact of sin has been (thoroughly) established. Bad news: sin separates. Separation between holy God and sinful man and man and man. Sin separates (and divides) families, communities, nations.
What is the solution? Is there an atonement for sin? Is there a man to stand in the gap? One who is both God AND man? How can the two become one? How may God- who is holy, be reconciled with a man who is a sinner? ~How can two walk together except they be agreed? ~

~ For the Son of Man came to seek and save what was lost ~ (Luke 19.10)

Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; how shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the LORD, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard Him; God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Ruach HaKodesh according to His own will? (Hebrews 2.2-4)

“For the (perfect) Torah was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Yeshua HaMashiach ”

~ There is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all men ~ (1 Timothy 2:5-6)

Our sin-debt? Payment (in full measure) has been paid. “Tetalesti”- It is finished. – Paid in Full.

Theresa

I think I’m understanding the cross a little more but in my mind I thought it all happened at once. The minute he was nailed and drawing his last breath he said it is finished. The blood and water flowed showing he was atoning and cleansing and paying the debt???

carl roberts

WHAT was finished? The will of the Father and the work He was sent here to do.

Renee

Luke 19:10 needs clarification in usage. In Matthew 10 and 15 Yahshua Himself makes it clear that He seeks to find the LOST sheep of the house of Israel. The sheep have been scattered and are fed false doctrine that leads them further away from the Kingdom and the Shepherd. Thank you Skip for clarifying and teaching the truth of what was nailed to the cross so that the sheep CAN hear the Shepherd’s voice and follow Him. He will feed us and restore us to the Way of the Father!

Brian Toews

I am beginning to get a more clear picture of this.In my home town, people approach me with concern. They ask if I am joining the jewish faith.Or do you still believe in jesus?Or, do you believe jesus died for youre sins? Its this last question that needs to be answered better by me.There are two things that I am sure of.First when he died on the cross,it allowed him to bring the ten tribes back into covenant with him.Secondly, when he arose he took the penalty (death)away from us. He arose on first fruits allowing us to be resurrected at the first resurrection. If there was something else that happened that day im not seeing it.

Rich Pease

Today’s scripture passage leaves out the first half of the sentence.

Am I wrong to think the whole sentence shows a bigger picture,
a more complete understanding?

“And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of
your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven all
your trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements
that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it
out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.” Col 2:13-14

Note the linkage: “having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out
the handwriting of requirements that was against us.”

Yes, Christ defeated death at the cross, but He also made believers alive
together with Him who had been dead in their trespasses and yet to receive
the circumcision of their sinful hearts re. Deut 10:16.

Believers received new life at the cross, His life. A life of forgiveness AND a life
that overcame the powers and principalities that had been against us as mentioned
in vs 15.

When I read Col 2: 11-15, I see so much more. Is it just me?

Pam

I think that’s exactly what Skip’s point is. The difference is that He see’s this as a 6000 yr. process that was begun before the foundation of the earth. The means for forgiveness was accomplished before there was a need for it. Removal of the penalty was accomplished at the cross. New life is accomplished at the resurrection of Yeshuah. Glorification is accomplished at His second coming and the resurrection of the saints.

Or something like that 🙂

carl roberts

And what are you going to do with Rev. 13:8? I’ll take a stab at it, -even thought it’s probably not a good idea to build a “theology or thesis” on one verse of scripture!

May I assume we are focusing on the “slain from the foundation of the world?” portion of this verse?

Yes, He was. In the mind of God- He was “good as dead” from the day He was born. The Messiah was a man with a mission in mind. The centerpiece of this, His mission was the cross. The cross, the tslav, the execution stake of the Messiah is central, crucial and vital! Satan really “messed up” thinking he won when the Son of Man was dead. Don’t you know, hell had a holiday until.. – Three days later. For not only was His crucifixion and burial part of the plan, but the resurrection of the Christ was the capstone of the central event of all history.
I know- “what about Abraham and Moses and all the other O.T. saints? Their’s was a “do” religion. Sacrifice a bull or a goat or a turtledove once a year upon the Day of Atonement.
Even when Abraham took Isaac to “sacrifice” him, – this (too) was to be a blood sacrifice. No one can escape knowing- ~ without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin ~
This has been true throughout the centuries and many a bull or calf has had their blood poured out before the altar and sprinkled upon the mercy seat, until..
Until a Lamb was born in Bethlehem. We have now “progressed” (in the fulness of time) from shadow to substance. “You shall call His name (what?)- and (why?) He will do what? ~ He will save His people from their sins.. ~ Sweetly, simply, sublimely, ~ whosoever shall call upon the Name of the LORD shall be saved ~ (Romans 10.13)
Too easy? Not “challenge” enuf? What if He were to say- “go, and wash in the Jordan river seven times..- would you do it? Then why will you NOT believe? You want to do something to “earn” salvation? Good.

~ Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the One He has sent.”
(John 6.29) But (all) these (things) are written (John chose his material) so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His Name ~ (John 20.31)

carl roberts

Thank you Skip, for your time involved in writing and responding.

“Don’t be afraid!” (he said.) “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people.” (Luke 2.10)

This, is where I’m coming from: “It is written.”
In the beginning. In the beginning was the LOGOS. Word. Thought. Idea. No one, (no, not one) sets out on any course of action without first “thinking about it.” (insert “selah” here..)
“I know the plans I have for you” declares the LORD (our) God. Plans to give you (both) a hope and a future. Both plans and preparation- (“I go to prepare a place for you”) require “thought.”
Become a Christian and leave your brain at the door? lol! No! Certainly not! And as for my “parameters?” Here they are (for all to see).

First: the Bible (the one we are reading now) is the inspired, written word of God.

Second: Our Bible, the written word of God is a goldmine when you learn to dig with a Hebrew shovel. Such treasure (much of it buried!) in the Book God wrote.

Confusion? or clarity? Is it (he inquired) the will of God for us (His own children) to go about “stumbling in the dark?”- living a life of “Huh?” Or are we, (the King’s kids) meant to live a life (His life in us- “not I, but Christ”), a life more “abundant” (a great “Greek” word!) and free?
The Greeks (nor the Romans for that matter) are not our enemy. ~ For we wrestle not against “flesh and blood.” ~

Another Biblical paradigm, (it is also written), ~ Christ (The Messiah- The Anointed One) died for sinners. ~

Is it (he inquired) against reason (come now, let us reason together) to say, (just the facts)- Have we have been thoroughly established to be sinners in need of a Savior (or can we save ourselves? for “All” have sinned..-(both) Jews and Gentiles, males and females.

– What was the purpose of the cross? Why the virgin birth? Oh friend!- It ALL points to the cross!

(May I?) Hallelujah for the cross! Oh how “Christian!” lol! Very well then.. – I will wear the label. Call me a Christian.. (please!) Let there be evidence enough to convict me.. “Guilty, your honor, I am a blood-bought, twice-born, Spirit regenerated, Spirit-filled, forgiven and (at minimum) twice-blessed child of the Sovereign King of the universes. Oh please! (lol!) someone pity me!
Jesus paid what? He paid it all. Without a doubt and no doubt, He is, and forever more will be King of all kings and LORD of all lords.
King of the Jews? Absolutely. Savior to the Gentiles? Hallelujah, yes.
Oh, here we go again with that (“tired, and worn out?”) John 3.16.
~ Because God So loved the (Jews only?) or because God so loved the (Greeks only?) ~ What do the scriptures say? ~ (this, is how we roll). Because God so loved- the world. Mighty big place and includes a lot of sinners. Greek sinners, Jewish sinners, Episcopalean sinners, vegetarians sinners, Republican sinners- “For all have sinned..” All men everywhere, from Adam forward with only One exception.
One sinless Sacrificial Lamb “without spot or stain.” Without blemish and without blame. ~ (I, too, “find no fault in Him!). He came unto His own and His own (say what?) -received Him not! I’ve gotta ask, “why?” or “why not?” Why would anyone –anywhere refuse such a Savior? It’s like offering a steak done to perfection to a dog who is contented to chew on an old bone. Or offering fresh green grass to a billy goat who prefers to munch on tasteless tin cans.
The Law (the Torah of YHWH) was (and still is!) our Schoolmaster to lead us to (the recognition and realization?- we all need) Christ. ~ He that offends in one point (all it take is one, much less the entire ten, I have “broken!”) is guilty of all! ~ (James 2.10) There is nothing (at all) “wrong” with the written Law, the Torah, the instructions of YHWH, the ten commandments. ~ the Law of the LORD is perfect! ~
Houston, we do have a problem. We are the problem! We have (absitively, posolutely) transgressed the Torah of YHWH, the Law of the LORD. The fact of our guilt has been thoroughly witnessed and established. Why are we guilty? Because sin is the transgression of the Law. We, (not only I, but all) have sinned.
~ Ask, and you will receive ~ Do I need forgiveness? If I ask God to forgive me for what I have done and for what I have said and for even the thoughts that have crossed my mind- would He honor His own word? ~ Ask, and you will receive? ~ If I seek His forgiveness, would He honor His word?
Again (and again..) ~ What do the scriptures say? ~

~ “I–yes, I alone–will blot out your sins for My own sake and will never think of them again ~ (Isaiah 43.25) What did He say? (“I will not remember your sins.”)

This gives me (both) pause and great cause for celebration! Personal salvation and a personal celebration! Forgiveness is available..-always. But.. (big but!)- ~shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? ~ And the answer is? (Amen) “God forbid!!” Say, who wants to sin now? Is sin (still today) as offensive and odorous to God who is thrice-holy? Is sin still as destructive, damaging, debilitating and divisive to we human creatures as it always has been? Oh friend! – Yes. It is so.

~ Ask, and you will receive. ~ Forgiveness. Is this “Christian?”- or Biblical?

And,- if (since) I have been forgiven (much, by the way..)- should I also extend this same forgiveness to those who have “trespassed” against me?
Is this “Christian,” or Biblical instruction? “It is written” (love those three words!)

~For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God to salvation to every one that believes; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek~

What is this gospel or (good news) of Christ?

Pam

I’m so glad you continue to open this dialog up. It’s one of those things that has never made sense to me.

What makes perfect sense is that Adam was forgiven the same way we are today. YHVH Made provision for the creation before it was brought into being.

carl roberts

No, Rich..- it is not just you..- I see it too.. All this, -and Heaven too!

Brought to us by, sponsored by..- our LORD Jesus (who is the) Christ.

Our salvation is three-fold, (dare I say “tri-une?”). This is the “tri-unity” of “so great salvation.”

As has been mentioned in today “mishpat” or teaching, – the penalty (or punishment) of sin. What is that penalty? Death- eternal separation from the One who is Life, Love, Light and Liberty.

Not only..- but also! Not only from the penalty of our sin (death), but also from the power (authority or dominion) of sin. ~ Friend, ~ sin shall no longer have dominion (authority) over you! ~ We may now (willingly) choose NOT to sin! We (all) have been given the gift of choice. Choose wisely, for every choice is followed by a (what?) consequence. None are immune from the law of the harvest. We WILL reap what we sow! And last (but certainly not least!) one day.. (O may it be soon!) we will be delivered from the presence of sin. There is no sin (none) in Heaven, the abode of the Holy One and those who are His.
It is quite shocking, (to say the least!) -this transformation from sinner to saint, but ~ He who has begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ! ~ How many times have we heard Him say: “Fasten your seat belt, -it’s going to be a bumpy ride!” lol!

~ The creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in travail together until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Ruach, groan inwardly as we wait for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved ~ (Romans 8.21-23)

Salvation is a crisis, (a birth) followed by the process of growth (sanctification!).

Rich Pease

I don’t disagree with your points about timeframes, etc.
The kindgom and eternal life are obviously forever.

I’m just wondering why Col 2:13-14 links forgiveness and
debt removal in the same passage?

sharon

He overcame death by death? The Lamb was slain, death remained until the Son overcame death through His RESURRECTION! Creating a NEW and LIVING WAY into the HOLY of HOLIES.

His name is Jesus and He is still introducing Himself as Jesus, He comes to every tribe and tongue as the Lover of their souls and they fall deeply in Love with Him and become known by Him because the veil is torn and we have access to places that were once forbidden to enter-so the Torah requires action, and so does faith, it requires believing as we pass through the veil into Him we will not die but live as one with Him, just because we believed the blood would cover us and restoration happens on the other side of the veil.

Skip, if you met with Jesus face to face, you could really change the world-your Love would lead people to the King and they would believe they too could freely come. Your book about your true life encounter with the King of Kings would surpass all you have written, I am asking the Lord for your open heaven encounter to come quickly, because He longs to give you rest.

Michael C

?

sharon

Are you finished? Or do you have an honest question?

Michael C

Hi, Sharon.

If this is in response to my ? mark, I just didn’t understand what you meant by your last two paragraphs above; the two that start with “His name is Jesus…,” and “Skip, if you met with Jesus face to face…”

Could you elaborate, please?

carl roberts

>> But, of course, Christianity made it the center. You might ask why since it is obviously the most offensive symbol you could choose as far as Jews are concerned <<

Have You Seen This Man?

~ Now it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples, that He departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities. And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples and said to Him, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me ~ (Matthew 11:1-6)

~ He will be a holy place; for both Israel and Judah He will be a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall. And for the people of Jerusalem He will be a trap and a snare ~ (Isaiah 8:14)

~ Therefore thus says the LORD GOD, "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in it will not be disturbed ~ (Isaiah 28.16)

~ And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on Me, the One they have pierced, and they will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for Him as one grieves for a firstborn son ~ (Zechariah 12.10)

~ For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His Name shall be called Wonderful-Counselor-The mighty God-The everlasting Father- The Prince of Peace ~ (Isaiah 9.6)

~ For the Jews require a sign..~ (1 Corinthians 1.22)

~ Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, His mother: ~ This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against.. ~

~ but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness..~

~ but to those whom God has called, "both" Jews AND Greeks, Christ the power of God and (Christ) the wisdom of God ~ (1 Corinthians 1.24)

Ester

Indeed, “Death is defeated in an unjustified death”!!!!! HalleluYAH!
This would clear ABBA’s Name of cruelty, turning a deaf ear to the cries of the innocent, and a blind eye to those in suffering.
Death is definitely defeated in an unjustified death! Assuredly, those who are innocently slain, or martyred will be fully avenged. This is justice, that will be meted out by the Elohim of Israel, YHWH,
Whom we baruch/worship.

“What did the certificate of debt imply? Well, what is the penalty for disobedience? Death!”
Through turning back to ABBA (repentance) and all His commandments, is when we will have new life, AND life eternal, as carnality and corruption that bring forth death has been conquered, is abolished by Yahshua’s death, rather than the Law/Torah, which is the standard we are to live by, and being held accountable to, as in the natural laws of the countries in which we live in.

The issue of the crucifixion being a sacrifice for transgressions, as a ‘sin’ offering, needs to be pounded out of our systems. Thank you, Skip for the persistence in purging us of this error.
Thank You, ABBA YHWH.
