Can It Really Be?
While in Oxford, my daughter spotted this figure on the ceiling of one of the college chapels. It certainly appears to be a demonic face, laughing at the audience of worshippers below. The same ceiling also had dragons and other mystical creatures in the ceiling. One has to wonder just how much pagan intention was involved in this.
There was a TV mini series a number of years ago called “Pillars of the Earth” that dealt with the building of the great cathedrals in England. This picture made me think of that. I think the series is available now on Amazon Prime for those who might want to watch. It is historically-based, but NOT an historical accounting. Still, it gives a perspective of who the artists might have been. (Some very PG scenes as I recall, so parents should preview it before making it family viewing.)
