Payback?

When King David came to Bahurim, behold, there came out from there a man of the family of the house of Saul whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera; he came out cursing continually as he came. 2 Samuel 16:5 NASB

Shimei – David’s last words seem to be nothing but payback. Just before he dies, he instructs Solomon, “Behold, there is with you Shimei the son of Gera the Benjamite, of Bahurim; now it was he who cursed me with a violent curse on the day I went to Mahanaim. But when he came down to me at the Jordan, I swore to him by the Lord, saying, ‘I will not put you to death with the sword.’ Now therefore, do not let him go unpunished, for you are a wise man; and you will know what you ought to do to him, and you will bring his gray hair down to Sheol with blood” (1 Kings 2:8-9). Why does David tell Solomon to kill Shimei? Is it only revenge? Is it a way for him to save face while his son does the wet work?

Weitzman offers some important insight. Shimei denounced David during the attempted coup of Absalom. At that moment, the united monarchy was at risk, and there was a possibility that the house of Saul might reemerge. “Shimei’s very existence reminded the people that David was a usurper, and that there were alternatives to who they might turn, which is why, in his last words to Solomon, David urges his son to send Shimei to his grave—not just as payback for a public insult but as a preemptive effort to snuff out any potential revival of Saul’s dynasty after his death.”[1] In other words, David’s advice is politics, not payback. He knows that Solomon must eliminate any possibility of a challenge to his throne, and the way to do that is the way kings have always dealt with potential rivals—eliminate them.

Why does this little bit of political background matter to us? First, it should cause us to re-evaluate our approach to biblical texts. Our concerns about the ethics of David’s instructions often ignore the political reality of the tenuous nature of Solomon’s ascension. In other words, the text is about the real life situations of the people. We might not like David’s solution, but unless we understand his circumstances we will miss the purpose and point of this bit of history. We must know the context of the text before we start applying it to our lives.

Second, what we learn is that people are people whether God is invisibly in the picture or not. David deals with power politics in the same way that all the kings of the ancient (and modern) world deal with power politics. Squash the opposition. If we find this uncomfortable it should not be because it is so different than our own times. We might object that David didn’t leave the situation in God’s hands, but we should probably ask if we don’t do the same things today. The Bible never whitewashes its actors. That’s a good thing since it means that their lives confront behaviors in our lives. History repeats itself—unless you and I make a determined effort to act differently.

Finally we see that self-preservation is a powerful motivator, so powerful that it often causes even the most spiritual among us to take control in our own hands. It is important to note that Solomon does not execute Shimei, at least not at the beginning. He actually constructs a scenario that allows Shimei to live but removes him from any possible threat. Ultimately Shimei presumes on Solomon’s graciousness and is executed, but the lesson is that the desire of the father, even for the son’s protection, does not mean that the son will do what the father wants. Every man chooses. Solomon did.   So do you and I. We can change the course of history today. Lesson learned.

Skip thought-provoking again. The Lord will always intervene for his purposes and will we can see it when we see obedience to his word for the long run. We might want to look at the recent elections. If we go in that direction we might just see that enough was enough. When the Lord reputation is at stake most often patience endurance is very valuable. His word tells us how to pray and what do wait on. Those that wait upon the Lord will be lifted up eagles wings Etc. As I see this meaning the encouragement that comes scriptural Alliance brings about the biblical hope God intends for his Believers to have. Believers are not disappointed when they are given proper biblical perspectives such as we learn today’s word. That’s why today’s word is so important. When things are aligned God make sense. Shinel as I see it had to be there because David’s Alignment reaction to what had to be done to the threat of what could have been if he was not removed. Was it an act of God’s justice? I think so.

A quick second thought just as pain or anything in the category of uncomfortable when it is not quickly dealt with. We wait on the Lord so he is glorified in the situation.

I think the kingly politics of the entire Bible can leave us feeling a little squeamish and make us feel disassociated from it, too. After all, we live in a mainly democratic world today, where EVERYONE is more or less at least promised to be a king, at least in the modern world. But that is how I have decided to read it. Put yourself, like Skip says, in the king’s shoes and go from there.

I was taught that at the Judgment Seat not only will sins of commission be brought up, but sins of ommission, too. What righteousness COULD I have potentially done in each circumstance? But it gets worse. About those potential scenarios: sins will be marked against me if I WOULD HAVE committed them but lacked the ability. I read once that we have a lot of little Hitlers running around that want to be, and would be, him in action except that no one takes them seriously. So don’t let anyone tell you that Hitler was the exception and not the rule in humanity.

This gives me pause on a daily basis. To repent for sins of commission, ommission, as well as POTENTIAL commission and ommission broadens the field considerably. I pause to search my heart. Would I have given that order if I were in David’s shoes? In today’s democratic society, it should not be so difficult to imagine that potential level of responsibility. We do know that every choice we make has universal implications, for good or ill, after all.

On a good note, this also means that I am still being expected to fulfill my original commssion to be a steward in full capacity even after the Tree. That means that I should learn how to move forward asking to be shown what that role looks like and confidently expect that I will be given the ability and opportunity to accomplish my full stewardship even though the rest of the world may be going to hell in a handbasket. Hmm, perhaps my prayers haven’t been nearly aggressive enough in both the repentance department or the petition for help and resources department. Time to ramp them up another notch!

Miss Hayes what would your thoughts be about being a nation of Kings and Priests in God’s Kingdom?

Laurita Hayes

I think those terms are bandied about loosely and most of us have no real understanding of what that means.

Yeshua is portrayed as taking the throne of glory (king) only after all judgment and that is going to be when all knees bow. Incidentally, the Lake of Fire burns the wicked IMMEDIATELY after that acknowledgment. There is no other way to read the text, and I know that I am saying something contrary to (very) popular theories right now, but I see no basis for the forced obedience of a planet under, essentially, purgatory for a thousand years. Since when has anyone EVER been forced to obey??? It should be suspicious that the majority of the casual Christian world thinks that is going to be the case, but since when did they ever get something right?

To continue to answer your question, I read that Yeshua will sit on the Judgment Seat first, before the Throne of Glory, and that will not be until the end of the age. Judgment is the role of the priest, and the saints have been tasked with the sharing of that judgment, which will take them a thousand years to do, but ask yourself, at the Second Coming (and I read that there will actually be a THIRD Coming after that), WHY do the living get “caught up into the air” to meet the risen dead doing the same to meet their Lord? Where are they going? Is it not conceivable that they are going to go to where the records are, which have been seen in heaven? And when is the New Jerusalem going to come down from heaven, which Yeshua promised that He was going back to “prepare” (build)? Ezekiel describes that New Jerusalem in detail, and it is going to be a perfect cube, according to him, about 1500 miles depth, breadth and heighth with a mountain in the middle (which has also been seen in vision) which I read is called the “mountain of the Lord”, with a throne at the top of it. Now, to set that monster down in Judea is going to essentially swallow and level everything around! And the verse also says that there will be a Coming which will be Yeshua and “all the saints with him” (1 Thess. 3:13) which most of the Christian world has been reading to mean that all the folks that went to heaven when they died are going to show back up. Really? And also, which throne is Yeshua going to take in which all eyes ever born can see Him? Would it not be a really high one? Like at the top of a mountain that would have to be a whole lot higher than any mountain on earth right now (do the math)?

Back to your question. We do all things through Yeshua, and we only sit in those capacities when He sits in them. So to answer that question is to answer when does Yeshua do them?

I would like to see what someone else has to say about this, and where they read it, too. Thanks.

Miss Hayes you have some insights as far as I can understand a nation of Kings and Priests for our God was to be praying for protection who are the people of God and finding connections with our civil leaders wherever we could and supporting them getting inside through interceding to God. This does work. Old and new covenants alike.

J. Stoermann

Thank you for that insight, Skip. I have always been bothered by this, and this makes perfect sense.

Once again we are confronted with the reality that with all our gifts on insight power and wisdom we need something beyond our selves. David was a man “after God’s own heart” yet flawed and broken as his behavior displays. Salomon was gifted with great wisdom yet still relied on the wisdom of the world to excel. It is only the gift poured out at Pentecost that has the power to change our history. And even with that present much of what remains is pain.. Link Removed

Interesting read.

I woke up today with this thought…or rather, i fell asleep w/it last night and woke up to it again this morning: When we stand before YHVH, and our lives are being reviewed, it is not going to be a conversation of why we did what we did.

YHVH isn’t going to ask us about our motives or hoped for results.

He is going to <b<show us why we did what we did.

No excuses. No rationales, no justifications.

It will be revealed and it will be irrefutable.

bcp

show dang it.

bcp and others if we would look at the content of what the day of atonement is we would find that this all applies funny thing how I overlooked it earlier. Atonement some say it needs a covering Yom Kippur the day of covering. If I remember correctly before we stand before the. King we make corporate confessions of the sins of commission and omission an act of cleansing first time that I was involved I felt brand new free alive again. On the Jewish calendar this is sometimes called. The great day. Even sometimes the day. A person’s fate is determined for the following year. Leviticus chapter 16 . 29 to afflict your souls who is mentioned six times meaning to Humble themselves paid to be aware that they were totally dependent upon Yahweh 10 times during the service worshippers rehearse a long list of sins recorded in the holiday prayer book called the. Machzor we understand today that Yeshua is our high priest and our sacrifice. It is an amazing study quite applicable today a fulfillment of Prophecy as all of the feasts of Israel are.

BB just some comments on afflicting the soul. I read that some rituals include whip lashing of up to 39 times, others of cleansing in a water bath from a pure water stream, others again consider audibly confessing transgressions while showing remorse in front of the gathering… Etc.
But yet atonement is about new beginning. Washing away the past. Isaiah and Ezekiel refer to this being an action by God when He calls.
Where do these rituals still justifiably belong except in the hope that they will be justifying in the eyes of God.
The apostolic teachings reveal cleansing through teachings alone -Paul. While Peter refers to the baptism as to prayer for redemption while the author of Hebrews makes the statement of not the washing of the flesh but the sprinkling of the mind…
The covenant of the Nazarene refers to a committed lifestyle towards the practicing of God’s will…
Are these not what being priests and kings for God implies.
As for the concern of judgement I think this was removed by the cross where we are crucified for the world and the world for us…
Babylon must fall or as John phrased it the world or personal greatness in our views…
Full cycle payback is achieved by paying it forward, John 14.
Peace through Christ the power and wisdom of God…
As we forgive so shall we be forgiven. So why the need for admission of guilt when feed my sheep is the instruction, not crucifying them.

Brett Weiner B.B.( brother Brett)

Very good response Seeker as judgement being removed would that be equal to saying no need for the sacrifice? I’m in the camp that understands that the sacrifice is still in place that is why will you need to look upon our Lords sacrifice for us under the order of the priesthood of Melchizedek. Thank you again for the feedback.

BB we are in adjourning camps, but that is okey as we both view the sacrifice as important.
