Folklore (Rewind)

But He answered and said to them,“When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’”  Matthew 16:2  NASB 1995

Red– It’s worth reconsidering evaluations of leadership from some we consider exemplars.  It all begins with Yeshua’s reference to folklore wisdom.

“Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning.” Yes, centuries after Yeshua mentioned this already common bit of folklore, we still use the same expression.   Of course, Yeshua’s point is that we are quite capable of applying folklore prophecies about the weather, which everyone knows is as unpredictable as anything on earth, and yet we seem incapable of applying the clear signs of God, which are undoubtedly the most stable things on earth.

With that in mind, perhaps we would do well to recall some of those sayings that help us measure the spiritual weather.

“It is a bad thing to be satisfied spiritually. . . . Our reach must exceed our grasp.  If we have only what we have experienced, we have nothing; . . .” Oswald Chambers

“The hallmark of an authentic evangelicalism is not the uncritical repetition of old traditions but the willingness to submit every tradition, however ancient, to fresh biblical scrutiny and, if necessary, reform.” John Stott

“One thing is clear to me: the temptation of power is greatest when intimacy is a threat. Much Christian leadership is exercised by people who do not know how to develop healthy, intimate relationships and have opted for power and control instead. Many Christian empire-builders have been people unable to give and receive love…”  Henri Nouwen

“Maybe they’d be O.K. if somewhere along the way they’d had true friends, defined as a group of people who share a mutual inability to take each other seriously. Maybe they’d be prepared for what is about to happen if they’d subordinated their quest for immortality to the joys of domestic ridicule.”  David Brooks

“Do not think that love, in order to be genuine, has to be extraordinary.  What we need is to love without getting tired.”  Mother Teresa

“People seek methods of learning to know God. Is it not much shorter and more direct to simply do everything for the love of Him? There is no finesse about it. One only has to do it generously and simply.”  Brother Lawrence

“The Church’s mission is not to accommodate her language to the existing language, to disguise herself so as to slip in unnoticed and blend in with the existing culture.  Her mission is to confront the language of the existing culture with a language of her own.”  Peter Leithart

Amen to all of the above!! Control & power vs. the free flow of give & take.

I had a little choir instruction way back when, and the director told us that it did not matter how well, loud, or creative we sang; if we were not keeping up (or back) with the rest of the choir, we were in the way.

I have realized that the “least among us” may be the best choir directors in that if anyone is out of line, it impacts them the most. If corporate is not being responsive to the front lines, they are in the way, too.

So, choir directors – all who are struggling the most with the gathering – please speak up, because you are the ones who are leading the way for the rest of us! It all depends on you. None of us get anywhere unless or until the ones who are having the hardest time do.

What do we need most from each other? Let us all speak up on that one!

Forget folklore. Yeshua wanted the “leaders” of the Pharisees and
Sadducees to understand REALITY. The jaded and suspicious minds
of these supposed leaders were unable to “see” the sweeping panorama
of truth Who was standing right before them. Not a stitch of folklore or
heavenly signs were about to persuade or convince them away from a
point of view they were decidedly locked into. It was a sad story then —
and a sad story today. Choose your spiritual leaders carefully!

When it comes to discussing weather I always remember back in the 50’s when I was a “traveling salesman” (Pharmaceutical) , there was a morning talk show
out of Seattle. The host was Jim French and his guest was the stations weatherman, Harry Wapler. Jim was kidding Harry about going to the Weatherman’s convention in Phoenix. Jim asked You’ll win the Best Weather Prediction award, won’t you Harry? Harry answered. No way, the guy from Phoenix predicts Sun every day and is 98% right. I make a prediction and 20 minutes later the Gulf of Alaska changes things and if I’m 50%, I’m doing good”.. I find sometimes,”that’s life” Shalom
