What’s Wrong?

Jesus wept.  John 11:35  NASB

Wept –Perhaps you’ll need to remind yourself of the crucial difference between the two Greek words for weeping before you continue.  Here’s the link (CLICK).

“What’s wrong with him?”

“Hey, not so loud.  Don’t let him hear you?”

“Okay, okay, but I don’t get it.  Why is he so calm?  It’s not normal.  He loved him, but we didn’t come soon enough.  I can’t figure out why he delayed us but now it’s too late to do anything and it just seems like it doesn’t matter to him.  I mean he’s barely shedding a tear.  Everyone thinks he’s really crying, but they don’t know him like we do.  I’m telling you, he doesn’t seem really moved at all.”

“Yeah, I can see that too.  I don’t know what he’s thinking.  He always acts kinda different, but I agree.  Something’s definitely not right.  I mean, look at everyone else.  They’re distraught.  Did you see his sisters?  They’re beside themselves.”

“So why is he so calm?”

“I thought he’d at least show respect for the dead but then I saw him speak with the older sister.  It was really odd.  She seemed more confused than comforted after that.  I don’t think he offered much sympathy.  Sometimes I think he’s got his head in the clouds.”

“Hey, wait.  Did you see that?”

“What?”

“He’s going toward the tomb, saying something.  I can’t hear from here.  Let’s go closer.  Come on, we’ll get up to the top of the hill.”

“Not so fast.  Hey, slow down.  Let me catch up.”

“Listen!  Listen!  Did you hear that?  He’s telling them to remove the stone.

“What?  Why would he do that?  It’s going to really stink!”

“I’m telling you, he’s mad.  Angry!  Listen.  He’s shouting at the open tomb.”

“What’s he saying?”

“Oh, no.  No.  It’s impossible!”

“What?  What?  Tell me!  I can’t see.  You’re in the way.”

“I heard him.  He’s telling Lazarus to come out.”

“What?  You’ve got to be wrong.  It’s been four days.”

“No, no, I’m telling you.  He yelled, ‘Come out!’  I heard it clear as a bell.”

“I didn’t.”

“Yeah, well you were making too much noise getting up here.  But I swear that’s what he said.  No, he didn’t say it.  He shouted it like you shout at a donk . . .  What?”

“I can see him now and . . . what’s that?  At the opening?  It looks like . . .”

“Yeah, yeah, I can see.  It’s him.  Wrapped in the grave clothes.  He’s walking out.  No, it can’t be!  Can’t be.  I don’t believe it!”

“I can see him.  It’s Lazarus.  I know that walk.  It’s him!

“G_d in heaven!  What’s happening?  He was dead, for sure.  Everyone knew that.”

“But that’s him.  Yes.  Look, look, everyone is falling back.  They’re afraid.”

“Yeah, well you would be too if we weren’t far away.  Maybe it’s a spirit from the grave.”

“No, look.  He’s touching him.  He’s tearing off the wraps.  He’s . . . smiling.  Smiling.”

“Remember this day, my brother.  Remember it well.  You’ve just seen something no man has ever seen.  G_d be praised.  Remember.”
