Form Follows Function
and God called the light Day and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day. Genesis 1:5 Hebrew World translation
Called – This will be a bit difficult, but I know you are up for it. I am going to ask you to step out the usual way we see the world after 25 centuries of Greek influence. I’m going to ask you to reconsider the world from the perspective of the ancient Near East where the meaning of existence is very different. I’m going to ask you to do this because the Bible rests on this Near Eastern worldview and it cannot be read or understood without absorbing a different way of thinking, even in areas where we believe the views we hold are indubitable.
In Hebrew, something exists because it fulfills a function. It does not exist simply because it occupies space and time. Unless something has purpose or acts according to design, it has no existence. Greek thinking is just the opposite. Something exists because it occupies space and time. It does not need to have purpose or be part of a design in order to exist. For example, the proposal that the universe came into existence as a result of the random clash of energy in the Big Bang suggests that something can exist without design or purpose. In fact, if the full implications of the Big Bang are correct, everything that follows is ultimately without design or purpose. This kind of thinking is simply impossible in a Hebrew context. It isn’t just wrong. It is nonsense! It’s like saying that red is green or that 2 + 2 = 5,000,000. In Hebrew, there is no existence without design and/or purpose.
In Hebrew, to name something is to specify its distinctiveness in design and purpose. Only those things that have a name exist and those things named only exist because they fulfill some role within the greater design. We have often heard that naming in Hebrew means describing the essence of something, but now we must realize that describing the essence of a thing does not mean describing the way it occupies space and time. To describe the essence of something in Hebrew is to say what it does according to its design and purpose. If I do not know how something fits into a role, I do not know what it is. You might think of the Hebrew term manna, a term that means “what is it?” Until the children of Israel knew what manna did (what its purpose was), they did not know it. It occupied space and time but it did not yet exist as part of the design of the cosmos.
If we apply this shift to our thinking about the Genesis story, we see immediately (I hope) that Day and Night are not designations about astronomical rotations. Day and Night are designations about what light does and what the absence of light does. This has nothing to do with the sun or the moon (which is why the designation of the function of astronomical bodies comes after the separation of Day and Night). Day is the name for the function of light. Night is the name for the function of not-light. Astronomy has nothing to do with it.
If this is true for Genesis 1 (go read all the “days” of creation from the perspective of what function is being named), how much more true is it of the making of humans. From a Hebrew point of view, we are what we are made to do. We exist within our designed function. When we act according to our designed function, when we play the role we are assigned in the order of the creation, we are named zakar and neqevah (male and female) in the demut and tselem (image and likeness) of the Creator. When we fulfill the function we were designed to fulfill, we exist as nephesh hayah, just as Elohiym is YHWH (His name is also His function).
But what if we don’t fulfill that role? What if we don’t do what we were designed to do? What are we then?
You might ask yourself, given the Hebrew worldview, if those homo sapiens (a Greek term) who do not fulfill the purpose for their design actually exist as human. And while you are thinking about that one, you might ask yourself if the ‘ezer kenegdo who is not fulfilling her design (by choice or by compulsion) exists as ishshah (woman).
Just something to think about as you go out today to do what you were designed to do.

Brother Skip, (and all readers)- I was designed purposefully and passionately by Yah and before I was born, I was to come to know intricately and intimately my Creator- the One who formed and fashioned me. “It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves.”
I was made to worship. I was made to know G-d and to enjoy Him forever. I was made (and am being made!) to have intimate intercourse with the G-d who now is. Today, I do not see Him, but I see what He has done. I am a witness to these things.
I have read His words, and His words are true. All of them. Never have I known anyone, anywhere- whose every word is like unto the words of this Man. He speaks nothing but truth. I am amazed, just as everyone else who has ever heard Him speak. His words are just as fresh today as when He spoke them thousands of years ago. – How can these things be? – Because, dear friends- “the LORD, He is G-d.”Yeshua is who He says is. Son of man, and Son of G-d. Our Redeemer, Savior, Comforter and Friend.
He is the “I AM.” He says, “I AM.” I agree- “He is.”
There are over three hundred “names” of G-d. (Here is one source: http://bible.org/article/names-god) -And yes, every one of them reveal who He is. “Those who know your name trust in you, for you, O LORD, do not abandon those who search for you.” (Psalm 9.10) Who does this apply to? – “whosoever will.”
One last thing.. “Blessed be the name of the LORD”- Baruch Hashem ADONAI!! -Amein!
Thank you Carl, i needed that reassurance of Whose i am & Whom i belong too…♥ jan
Skip – this is a load to think about & consider…
“And while you are thinking about that one, you might ask yourself if the ‘ezer kenegdo who is not fulfilling her design (by choice or by compulsion) exists as ishshah (woman).” That is a sad state of being… i am not married but i am presently fulfilling the ‘ezer kenegdo” position in my life (does that make sense?)… i am not married by my choice but by His choice (He will bring him when He is ready & i am ready (take that both ways…) – the way i understand it because i still want to be a woman & not a man – the pursued & the protector for sure… by compulsion – am not sure what that even looks like…
kinda like the lions in Afrika… doing/being what you are supposed to be doing where you are supposed to be doing it… existing/exists…
But what if we don’t fulfill that role? What if we don’t do what we were designed to do? What are we then?
i can hardly wait to see others response/comments to this article – cause i am astounded… 🙂
jan
See Yeshua’s comment in Matthew 19. Some are called, some make a choice. God uses both.
Shalom, @Jan, I hear you and am asking the same questions. Skip mentioned the name of YHVH and the function of His name. One thing I have learned is that each has a name and from Hebrew when they gave a name it had a function. Hebrew is function and greek is absract.
I have looked at my own name (as yours lol) and in the Hebrew it does have a function. In scripture their name/function had a lot to do with what God purposed for them. Just a thought. 🙂
@Skip…I agree with your perspective on the Hebrew, but the existence part I would question what you are saying. If we are not functioning as Ezer Kenegdo…we don’t exist??
I think you have opened something here..LOL Do we need to look at the meaning of exist?
Janet
Janet, i am so curios what does our “name” mean – the function of it – what is our purpose supposed to be in Hebrew – i thought of that myself but didn’t know where to find it – guess i could have googled it!!!
I have Skip’s book “Guardian Angel” but have not read it all – does it speak of not functioning in your role as ezer kenegdo & if not are you a woman – wonder if he explains it in his book??? have you read the book Janet???

I know it’s rather mechanical, but try thinking of it this way.
If a piece of particular machinery is MOVED by cogs that are interlocking, each cog has a place and a purpose within the function of that machine. If removed, it still exists, yet has no REAL purpose (except as perhaps a paperweight, etc…)
To carry it further, the removal of it HINDERS, if not ceases, the function and efficiencency of that machine as a whole, and if inserted into another machine (where it doesn’t belong) jams or damages it.
I know that’s rather simplistic, but I think it’s the point that’s being made. To exist without a purpose is only to “rust away into non form”, or destruction. That is no existence at all, but rather a “waiting around” for that ending.
Something to think about. Adam (literally) CALLED the animals THEIR NAMES. He didn’t just name them. Here we see Adam (man) functioning in the same capacity as God who CALLED the light, day. So we see that God not only named it (design) but He called it (function=to EXPOSE things for what they are) Here’s the interesting part. Hebrew is always reader centered, so that although the light ALWAYS exposes a thing, we can choose not to see or acknowledge it. We have a choice to fulfill our calling, light does not. We recieve repercussions for the decisions we make, light does not. “let us make man in our image and our likeness..”, nothing else in all creation (as far as we know) has that designation. What does it mean to have a “free will”!!? Eyes to see and ears to hear, That’s my prayer.
Thank you Robert – that helps to see things more clearly for sure (especially for me).
AND I SO TOTALLY AGREE HERE: “we can choose not to see or acknowledge it. We have a choice to fulfill our calling, light does not. We recieve repercussions for the decisions we make, light does not. “let us make man in our image and our likeness..”, nothing else in all creation (as far as we know) has that designation. What does it mean to have a “free will”!!? Eyes to see and ears to hear, That’s my prayer.” AMEN & SO BE IT…

“Form follows function”
In my mind, even Ha Satan (think Job) was designed for us
Makes me think of one of my favorite songs
Kings of Leon – Use Somebody
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnhXHvRoUd0
I’ve been roaming around
Always looking down at all I see
Painted faces, fill the places I cant reach
You know that I could use somebody
You know that I could use somebody
Someone like you, And all you know, And how you speak
Countless lovers under cover of the street
You know that I could use somebody
You know that I could use somebody
Someone like you
Off in the night, while you live it up, I’m off to sleep
Waging wars to shape the poet and the beat
I hope it’s gonna make you notice
I hope it’s gonna make you notice
Someone like me
Someone like me
Someone like me, somebody
Im ready now
Im ready now
Im ready now
Im ready now
Im ready now
Im ready now
Im ready now
Someone like you, somebody
Someone like you, somebody
Someone like you, somebody
I’ve been roaming around,
Michael, I have been meaning to get back with you about the song & what you stated/typed about satan – i believe he is used for our benefit too – God could have done away with him but perhaps God’s mercy & economics kept him/satan around to help teach us lessons – to provide trials & adversities like he did with Job – again, God uses evil to produce good in us in a round about way…
liked the song too – had never heard it before the day you posted it – we all sure do share a lot of music & video/movies with one another – some i have never heard or seen before… not only do i receive new revelation regarding the Word of God but i also get my horizons broadened culturally & artistically…

“I’ve been roaming around”
Hi Jan,
Good to hear from you, I’ve been meaning to get back to you regarding the macho stuff.
But I love the song above, because it makes me think of one of my favorite passages in Job:
Job 1:6 One day the Sons of God came to attend on Yahweh and among them was Satan.
Job 1:7 So Yahweh said to Satan, “where have you been?” (And Satan replies:) “Round the earth, roaming about”
So when I hear the Kings of Leon, I think of Satan out roaming around, looking down at us and trying to find some trouble.
Then the song “humanizes” Satan with the following lyrics:
“I could use somebody,
Someone like you.
I hope it’s gonna make you notice
Someone like me.”
And we are left with a kind of romantic love relationship
In which we desire the “look of the other” to feel whole again
But in the other we never find what we are looking for (fulfillment)
At least according to Bono 🙂
Michael, i saw your response last night but was too tired to comment…
i like that song to but i would never have connected it to satan – really don’t like connecting anything to him for sure… it was more like a song about a person with a longing to be loved & fulfilled but reaching for & desiring the wrong things to fill the hole in them but wishing they had somebody “like you”…
not sure how Bono fits into this picture (your comment) did he write the song or just a friend’s comment/belief about finding fulfillment???
the truth is – there is no fulfillment except in Christ & all things under Him unto us – that hole, that lack – that longing should be filled with HIM…♥
i had never heard of the Kings of Leon till you revealed them here – i listened to a few other of their songs too: FAITH, HOPE, LOVE || King’s X – It’s Love || NEVER GET TIRED OF YOU || We Were Born to Be Loved & the words & music were all good – i learn so much here – the true Word of God & music & movies…♥
macho – was there more to expound on from you??? ♥

“i like that song to but i would never have connected it to satan – really don’t like connecting anything to him for sure”
Hi Jan,
Understand, but I tend to think of Satan as a “tool” in God’s “toolkit,” kind of like the “Left Handed Gun (Paul Newman).”
Michael is there on the other Hand, “judging souls” in Christian mythology.
In my view, Satan’s function is to bring us trouble and when our pain is great enough, we turn to God.
Satan is sort of like Luca Brasi in the GodFather, who gives us “the offer we cannot refuse.”
Bono is the lead singer of U2, who sings one of my favorite songs: “still haven’t found what I’m lookiing for.”
Of course, Bono knows we will never find what we are looking for in romantic love, but we look for it anyway 🙂

Jan, I have his book too, but like you have not finished it. I have not seen anything about “not functioning” in the role.
I have been studying, learning, teaching some Hebrew since 05 and have picked up some understanding along the way.
Our name is a Hebrew name, but transliterated is Yochana= Gracious, to give Grace (look up that in Hebrew)lol.
It is also the feminine for John/Yochanan. There is alot in a name. Yochanan’s name had alot of function. Look at John the baptist and John the beloved of Messiah. The thing is knowing the function and choosing to receive it. The Hebrew’s knew instantl… it was how they lived and moved in their day. It was their life. They knew nothing else, they understood function.
hope this was helpful.
blessings
Janet, I forgot about Yochana – i used to have it on my facebook – my Hebrew name but they changed something & it went away… 🙁
i hope i have lived up to my function/my name – sometimes i don’t see it but is/i sure hope so: “Our name is a Hebrew name, but transliterated is Yochana= Gracious, to give Grace…”
Yochana

Here’s a lot a fun- (Hebrew, for sure..) Carl=man. Hey man!- how you doin’? That’s me! A face in the crowd. Yo!- dude! Yet not just any man (even though my name translates into Chinese- SumDumGuy) 2 Corinthians 5.17 tells me- If “any man” (that’s me!) be in Christ (praise G-d, I am!) He (or she) is a new creature- a new creation- total makeover folks!- Old things have passed away- behold all things (including my name?) are new.
Abram became Abraham. A new name and under new management. Saul became Paul- remember? And now, ladies and gentlemen, by the grace of G-d and through the regenerative power of the Ruach HaKodesh- I too, have been given a new name and a new ‘function.’
Robert, I would have to agree-, for I also now see myself (could be wrong tho’)- as a little cog within a great big wheel. Or maybe a “wheel within a wheel” as in the perspective of Ezekiel. But, “each cog” performs an important function. We (together) compose the (present) body and (future) bride of our LORD, -our Kinsman-Redeemer, our heavenly Boaz. We (together) are Ruth. Not a Jew, not a Gentile, a half-breed loved, chosen and redeemed, renewed, restored and revived because of our relationship with our Kinsman-Redeemer, the LORD Jesus, (who is the) Christ.
He has said, (has He ever lied?)- I will build my church. As part of His body (little cog that I am) and as a functioning part of His future bride- (who is included in this list?- Moses, David,Abraham, -know any others?- only millions!)- I perform a function within the body of Christ. And when, dear friends, am I the “happiest?” When I am serving others, for I serve Him by serving (avad) others. And so do you. This is our form (the form of a servant) and this is our function-, “in love, serve one another.” What is a servant who is not serving?- “for you serve the LORD Christ.” (It is written!)
We must “stick tight” to this Hebrew ‘name’ thing- for this is no small potatoes. Names (in the Bible) are mondo-important. Names are ‘telling’. Go through the book of Ruth sometimes and study the names involved in this revealing love story. I guarantee a “wow” moment for those who do.
All the names in the Bible perform this function. They ultimately reveal a person’s character or core. Naming a child (in Hebrew) was (and I spose’ still is..) a big-dot-deal. Every one of us who are “in Christ” have been given a new name! – and a new purpose and function- within the body of Christ. – Meanwhile, call me anything- just don’t call me “late-for-dinner!”
Re: the birth of John the Baptist foretold: story in Luke 1, and also the birth of Jesus foretold v. 26-38 to Mary, and the Angel says even your relative Elizabeth is going to have a child in her old age. V. 39—80. Mary goes ASAP to see Elizabeth in the hill country, and apparently stayed until the baby was born to Zechariah and Elizabeth. The father had been struck without speech for his disbelief when he was told by the angel GABRIEL that his wife would have a son and his NAME WOULD BE JOHN. In fact the angel told Zechariah that he would not be able to speak until the baby was born because he did not believe his words that were sent by God. In v.57-66: the baby boy is born, and on the 8th day the neighbros and relatives were all full of joy and they came to circumcise the child, and they though his name would be Zechariah after his father, but his mother spoke up and said, “NO! He is to be called John. They rebuked her and said there is not one among your relatives who has that name. They then made signs to his father, asking what he would like to name the baby. He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, ” HIS NAME IS JOHN.” And at once, his mouth was opened and his tonuge was loosed, and he began speaking and praising God.—— read on – Zechariah’s Song v. 67-80.——– THE SON OF ZECHARIAH AND ELIZABETH, KNOWN TO US AS JOHN THE BAPTIST, THE FORERUNNER OF JESUS. YES , WHAT A NAME & PURPOSE THAT BABY GOT ! L.B.

Michael is there on the other Hand, “judging souls” in Christian mythology. ARE YOU SPEAKING OF MICHAEL THE ARCH ANGEL???
In my view, Satan’s function is to bring us trouble and when our pain is great enough, we turn to God. WELL, YES – THEY SAY MOST COME TO JESUS IN TIMES OF CRISIS… ♥
Satan is sort of like Luca Brasi in the GodFather, who gives us “the offer we cannot refuse.” AFTER A WHILE, YOU LEARN THAT THE “OFFER YOU CAN’T REFUSE” BECOMES JUST A TEMPTATION YOU CAN WALK AWAY FROM… ♥
Bono is the lead singer of U2, who sings one of my favorite songs: “still haven’t found what I’m lookiing for.” HOPEFULLY YOU HAVE FOUND WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IN CHRIST JESUS… ♥
Of course, Bono knows we will never find what we are looking for in romantic love, but we look for it anyway – WELL HOPEFULLY BONO KNOW JESUS CHRIST & THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER BY NOW… ♥
