Workmanship

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus, for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”  Ephesians 2:10

Workmanship – Your life is a divinely inspired poem.  Yes, that’s right.  The same word used for “workmanship” in this verse is the root of our English word poem.  In fact, it even has the same phonetic sound – poiema

God doesn’t build machines.  He is an artist, not a laborer.  He paints the sky with diamonds.  He sculpts the earth with forms and shapes too marvelous to imagine.  And best of all, He is the most gifted poet in the universe.  He has written billions of perfect stanzas, all part of the poem of creation.  When He is finished writing, His work will be on display forever.

You and I each have a unique set of verses in God’s masterpiece.  It all fits perfectly together in His plan.  What a gift it is to know that your life is intended to be a part of the divine poem, penned by God’s own hand.  You aren’t the sum of electrons and molecules or the consequence of cosmic explosions.  You’re not just muscles and joints and mental constructions.  You are God’s poem.  And poems always have meaning and purpose.  They are not random collections of syllables and letters.  They are words carefully chosen to convey the meaning of the author

Too often we think that we are writing our own poem.  We throw together words and symbols like “children”, “spouse” “$$” and “=” and we think we can come up with meaning.  We have forgotten that the author of our poem is God.  He is the one who picked the right words to give us meaning.  Let your life become His poem in the world.

Today:  I will stop trying to make sense of all my symbols and let God tell me what meaning He wants to give to His poem.

“Father, thank you for creating me a work of art written by You.  Help me to put aside my efforts to write my own meaning.  Give me the confidence to allow Your meaning to be shown in my life today.”
