Savior
“for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior,” Luke 2:11
Savior – What is the role of a savior, a soter in Greek culture? It’s quite a bit more than we realize today. If we want to really see what God did that night, we need to look deeply into Jesus as soter.
Did you know that:
- A soter was the benefactor of an estate. Jesus made us the beneficiaries of God’s great estate.
- A soter was one who ushered in prosperity and happiness. God wept tears of joy when Jesus arrived. A new reign began.
- A soter delivered people, not things, from danger and destruction.
- A soter preserved the peace. Jesus’ birth is the announcement of a reign of peace between God and Man.
- A soter establishes a dependency between the one who saves and the saved.
- A soter could be either a god or a man, and Jesus was both.
- A soter was a physician, a healer.
- A soter was a philosopher, a great thinker with divine wisdom.
- A soter was a statesman and ruler. “And the government shall be upon His shoulders.”
- A soter was royalty, an emperor. The King of kings.
Apparently, the angel who announced the birth of this child knew quite a bit about the plan. The choice of soter is not accidental. Go look at one other use of soter in Luke 1:47.
Soter is God.
Praise Him all creatures here below. The Soter has come.
