Skip, what are the specs on the camera equipment you are using? Brand, type, lens, etc…. Beautiful butterfly pictures! God’s beautiful artwork illustrated in butterflies!
Nikon D800, Nikkor 70-200 2.8 lens, these shot at ISO 400 at 1/2000 of a second. Shooting butterflies is particularly challenging since they are normally in constant movement. If you shoot fast enough to stop the movement, then you struggle with the necessary amount of light for a good exposure and/or the right depth of field. Boosting ISO helps but then you risk loss of saturation. Fortunately with digital you can take 200 shots in a matter of a couple of minutes and pick out the ones that worked. I suppose I have shot something like 1000 butterfly pictures and I have maybe 10 or 12 perfect ones. Professionals often capture the butterflies, put them in the refrigerator for awhile to slow their metabolism, and then shoot them when they are released as this slows them down. Great shots but not exactly kosher in my view.
