A Follow-up: Children Under the Bridge
On March 28 of this year, I posted a Today’s Word with a challenge about giving to “Children Under the Bridge.” I noted that if everyone who gets Today’s Word by email contributed just $1.00 a month, we would increase our support of this effort by 30%. I have in my hands the May report on the work. Now there are over 100 children of women forced into prostitution in the program. Thanks to the generosity of some Today’s Word readers, we now have a tent for them to meet during the rainy season. And educational supplies. And food. All good news!
But I was shocked, to say the least, to find that only two people were added to the support list after the March 28 Today’s Word. I’m not here to chastise you, because those who are supporting this effort are making ENORMOUS differences in the lives of these children. Some would DIE without you. But I was, frankly, disappointed. Is there anyone in this community who could not give $1 a month? I doubt it. That means the majority of my readers have chosen not to be involved. There are probably many good reasons for this. I just can’t think of any off hand.
The purpose of At God’s Table is to show compassion wherever we are able. But somehow I didn’t communicate this need very well. I know God is thrilled with those who have decided to help these children. I wish we would all make some commitment to do that. I’m just feeling inadequate in getting others motivated. I wish I could sit with each one of you who read this and find out what I need to do to help you feel this need too.

“Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak of Lubavitch used to say: When you make a decision to give charity and to help another person generously–even if your decision does not reflect your available means–new channels are created on High to produce all that is needed for the fulfillment of your good resolution.“
Sorry, Skip! It’s not your way of communicating, it’s just the many, many, many messages I receive each day, so I forget…. But you’re right: we have an obligation. We’re here to bless others. So I will commit to this by a monthly donation. Sorry I didn.t do this before….
Me too! It was good to be reminded, thanks Skip
What a perfect day to remind us to remember the Motherless children so we can help Jane who is willing to help God’s children. Jesus loves the little children! I am thankful for your efforts to help and allow us the Priviledge to give. Thanks, Skip
On the flip side, there are some of us involved in doing this type of ministry in other places like this. And sadly, we have very few contributors as well. The good news is, we have watched the Lord rub our nickels together and make things happen with nothing. I pray the Lord blesses the work there in amazing ways where you least expect it.
Thanks. I wish the same thing too.
Skip; I had not seen the original TW I’m glad to help thanks for the opportunity.
Thank you for the reminder. You communicate very well. Do you know if there’s anything being done to help the mothers get out of prostitution?
May YAH Bless this gift and bring the necessities for the Children and Women that their relief will give them peace to know HIS word and way…thank you for the prodding! I will donate annually with a reminder…everything I have comes from HIM…am so glad to be reminded to donate!
Hard of hearing ……thanks for the reminder..
I can’t figure out how to donate $1 a month. Only $20 and a one time gift.
OK. I will come up with some alternatives
Hello, Paul. I’ve added the option to be able to donate monthly for as little as $5 a month.
The problem is not giving to your charity. The problem is the 24 others that will want a donation this month for a cause that I did not choose. Soon I am on the hook for $450 a year ($25 +$12.50 postage x 12) if no more worthy? causes find out I can be influenced to give some amount. It just seems that here lately more and more causes end up in my mail box or my in box. Just today I had a very worthy cause ask for $17,000, and I am praying about contributing part of that amount. Now that this is off my chest I will send $12 to you on pay pal now for this year. I consider my obligations are made with God over looking them. I will have to rethink my position for next year.
