Bound to Deliver
Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.” Genesis 22:2 NASB
Take – It’s been almost ten years since we examined this pivotal verse. Want to review what we’ve already learned? Here are prior investigations:
Oh, there’s also a longer article about the prefix. CLICK HERE
I’ve put these in chronological order so that you can once again experience the growing understanding of the complexity and the emotional depth of this story. Why have I decided to look at this again? Haven’t we plumbed the depths here? Well, I recently received another man’s look at this verse. Since it comes from a recognized biblical Jewish scholar, I expected to find a discussion of the unusual prefix. But it wasn’t there. Perhaps it wasn’t important for this particular article, but, I would argue, you really can’t understand what’s happening in the Akedah if you don’t start with that little letter na.
Just one more note: apparently, despite Abraham’s assurance to the servants, Isaac doesn’t return with his father. All kinds of interesting family dynamics occur after this, including another very unusual verse, Genesis 31:42. For that you’ll have to read my book, Crossing.
