Light

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life; whom shall I dread? Psalm 27:1

Light – Everything living depends on light.  It’s a biological fact.  In this universe, light is the fundamental ingredient of existence.  This Hebrew word (or) is linked directly to life and happiness.  Light it is also used to describe a happy face, a good day, a successful life, and the Light of the World.  This word has physical and spiritual connections.

Ancient religions often worshipped the sources of light – the sun, the moon and the stars.  Some of that idolatry is still with us today.  Arrangements of stars and planets do not control destiny.  God does.  This is the reason that the creation story in Genesis is so completely different than all of the other ancient cosmologies.  God creates light.  Light is not the source, it is the product.  God is the source.

Just as everything in the physical universe depends on light (and on the source of light), so everything in the spiritual universe depends on the source of light.  When David says, The Lord is my light”, he is saying that everything he is depends of this one source.  His physical and spiritual being depends on God alone.  David is saying much more than “God is my guide” or “God shows my way.”  David is saying that without the Lord, he does not exist.

Every day I start with this prayer:  “Lord, thank you for this day.  I give myself to You for this day.  I depend entirely on You.  You are my reason for being today.  This is Your day to do with me what You want.”  When the sun comes up, my day has already connected with the true Source of light.  Those beautiful rays are only reminders that I am alive because He is my light.

Are you living because of His light?
