Nullify/Establish – What in the world is Paul talking about? Isn’t faith independent of the Law? Doesn’t the Law simply lead us to faith? Don’t all those rules and regulations merely point out how much we need to be rescued by grace? How can Paul possibly say that faith establishes the Law?
One of the biggest doctrinal roadblocks separating Jews and Christians is the Christian view of the Law. Ever since Origen, Chrysostrom and Augustine, Christian theology has proclaimed that grace set aside the Law. According to this teaching, the Law was incapable of rescuing men from sin. It was nothing more than a spotlight illuminating the hideousness of our unholiness. Fortunately, Jesus removed the curse of the Law in His sacrificial death and we, as Christian believers, no longer live under the impossible demands of those ancient Jewish ways. Nearly all denominations teach that Paul rejected the primacy of the Torah and converted to Christianity, articulating replacing the Law with grace.
But this verse is a real thorn in the flesh for Law vs. Grace theology. Paul boldly proclaims that faith makes the Law stand (the Greek verb is histemi). Faith fixes, makes firm, sets in place, the Law (the Torah). This claim seems to be 180 degrees from the idea that faith replaces the Law. What’s going on here?
Did you notice that the crucial verbs in this sentence have a legal ring to them? “Nullify” (Greek katargeo) means “to render inactive, to cause to cease, to terminate.” These are just the kinds of words you would associate with a legal contract. In fact, if I don’t do what is required in the contract, I breach it. The only way out of a contract is either to fulfill the requirements or to have it rendered null and void. But notice what Paul says. Faith does not render the Law (Torah) null and void. Faith does not set aside the Law. In fact, Paul is so adamant about this point that he uses the enhanced negative expression me genoito alla (May it never be – but [the strongest form of “but”]). This is the idiomatic expression “God forbid!” Anyone who thinks that faith makes the Torah null and void is crazy!
Instead (really with a lot of !!! since it is alla in Greek), faith establishes Torah. How does faith do this? Well, if you were Jewish, it would be obvious. Faith is doing what the Torah requires. That’s why faith establishes Torah. By doing what the Torah instructs me to do, I become a living example of the reality of faith. My trust in God’s word, and the subsequent practice of that word, makes faith obvious to the world. Do I have faith? Look at my life! If I am observing Torah, then you know that I have faith because that’s what faith means. There is no separation between believing and doing. If I have faith, I do what God asks me to do. Conversely, if I am not doing what God asks me to do, then I don’t have faith no matter what I may claim about myself. Faith is the application of trust in God to my daily behavior. Faith works.
It’s just like any other legal contract. I accept the arrangement God offers. I agree to live by the terms of the contract. By the way, He didn’t have to offer it to me but He did anyway. That’s grace. But faith is fulfilling the contract because I trust what He says.
The Hebrew idea of faith cannot be divorced from obedience. A person who does not obey does not have faith, just like a person who does not honor a legal contract cannot claim the benefits. Go ask Paul of Tarsus, P.A.

The Law was (and is) our SchoolMaster to lead us to Christ.

I “shalted”.. I erred, I sinned. I (myself) have broken the Law. Guilty as charged- your Honor. -And who is the Judge? ONE only. I stand naked, shamefaced,guilty before ADONAI, for I too (just as my “not-so-grand” parents, Adam and Eve- before me.
Notice please, Moses (a very venerable name) was a sinner. So was Adam. So was David. So was Solomon and so was Peter,Paul, Mary, -shall we go on? Let’s view the short list.- Who has NOT sinned? His Name should come quickly to our lips. There is only (ever) ONE who has not- and we (all-Jew and Gentile, circumcised and non, male and female- know Who this is and we also know His defined purpose during His short sojourn with us.
He was (and is) the Lamb of G-d who takes away (then and now) the sins of the world- (mine included).
No, there is nothing wrong with the Law of the LORD. The Word of the LORD stands forever. “You, ADONAI, will honor your word above all your Name.” – that dear friends is quite a claim. The grass withers, (that’s us- grass- frail and fragile creatures)- BUT (love those Bible buts) the Word of G-d endures (and will endure continuously) forever.
Nothing at all has changed since Adam, we are still (all) sinners in need of Savior. Whether brought up in a Jewish home or Catholic home or the home of an infidel, whether a rich home, no home, whether from Poland or Chicago- the word of the LORD, G-d’s Word, the living, active, effectual, energizing Instructions toward all mankind are: “whosoever will may come.” And in the words of our Master (Himself)- “Bring him (the sinner) unto me”. Let the leper come- I will heal Him.
“I know the plans I have for you”- says Who?- says the LORD. – Who am I to argue?
Years I (too) spend in vanity (just like Solomon) and pride, caring not my LORD was crucified “at Calvary.” (Yes, please- know Who was hanging on that tree on that day..) Know who it was you crucified. The “finger of blame”- points directly at me. I am the one to blame for Christ died for me. It was my sin that held Him there until it was accomplished, (accomplished as in “done”, finished, final, full, complete) – I am (now) finally free from the condemnation of the law. Not free from the Law itself, but rather free from the condemnation for I am “in Christ” and a new creation. The old man (so long self) is dead. Carl is no more, for I (too) have been crucified with Christ. I identify with His death. When He died, “I” died.
But that is far from the end of the story, because He is now alive. We serve a living Savior. Christ now lives in me and lives in the hearts of every blood-bought believer. If I will ever glory- it will be in the cross of the crucified ONE, for nothing good have I, whereby Thy grace to claim..- I’ll (ever) wash my garments white- in the blood of Calvary’s Lamb. Redeeming blood has been my theme- and shall be ’till I die.
But what about Torah? Torah is how we roll. Torah is how we live. Yeshua has instructed us (in His word)- “if you abide in Me, and my words abide in you..” Where are these words to be found?- “it is written.” Open tHis Book,- “it’s in there..”
The will of G-d, the witness of G-d, the wisdom of G-d and the ways of G-d are all fully revealed to and for “whosoever will” in the words of G-d.
“You do err,” Yeshua said to a group of highly educated Pharisees, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of G-d. (helpful household hint..)- G-d spoke this world, (and all others) into existence.. Amein.

Skip, I sure would love to read the source documents and the arguments for this claim. Christian theology certainly set aside the law in terms of justification – saved by grace through faith. But you begin to wonder what possible explanation there is for the post Reformation conflict in England and what became known as the Puritan “experiment”.

So there are contrary opinions. But it is not opinions that count here. It is tangible and documented statements of faith. The Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism, the Westminster Confession, and the Larger and SHorter Catechisms, all extol and explain the law of God. We know they would not go so far as to endorse sacrificial laws, but the rest of the law was no problem. Samuel Rutherford’s Lex Rex – Law is King – is written in this tradition.
All I’m suggesting is that is it not possible to broadbrush Christianity so easy and claim it rejected Torah. Otherwise, how do you explain the real exceptions?
But your response admits that even these statements of faith do not endorse the sacrificial requirements (and I suspect kosher diets), so they clearly do not accept Torah as it was given. Why not? If the commandments were given by God, why pick and choose? To say Law is King but to systematically disregard those aspects no longer deemed appropriate (on whatever basis) seems to make the case for me.
Dr. Moen, I think I know what you are explaining but it seems to leave me uneasy. If faithfully following the Torah is saving faith, then what was/is the purpose of Jesus? Furthermore, if Jesus fulfilled the Torah, why would we need to “fulfill” it? Let me say right away that I agree, Christianity is/requires “holy” living as a demonstration of true faith. And I agree with you generally regarding the need for a cultural context, however you seem to be requiring Gentiles to become Jewish proselytes to become Christians. Forgive me if I seem argumentative, I assure you I am just trying to frame my questions in the shortest way and not arguing with one as knowledgable as yourself. Thanks for your comment on the blog site. From your question, it appears as if you have dropped in to the middle of a long conversation that has been going on for about 2 years on this site. Can I suggest that the answers to all of your questions are already on the site? You simply need to serach the site of terms like “law” “grace” “Torah” “Obedience” etc. or for specific verses that you think might have warranted comment.
There are MANY others who can adequately comment on this as well, most of whom have added to the blog over the years.
i think it is pretty simple, at least to me – it takes faith to follow Torah & when we follow Torah it produces faith – it is a double/triple blessing & more…

AND no one but you knows exactly what God/Jesus tells you to do – so don’t let man or woman accuse you or judge you for not doing (something) when they don’t know what it is that God/Jesus has told you to do… what you are doing or not doing in God/Jesus may not be visible to the world – like our relationship with HIM it is intimate – it does not have to be an outward show – the left hand does not or is not supposed to know what the right hand is doing – so don’t do for man or woman’s approval do for God/Jesus’ approval & your faith/doing will certainly please HIM…

wouldn’t it be grand if we all could experience the “road to Damascus” blinding light that we may see – just like Paul of Tarsus, P.A….
“Paul knew that the existence of God can easily be perceived by anyone, that man can become aware of God, but that many men’s deliberate sin halted this good beginning by immoral activities which accompanied their idolatry. Therefore, Paul had an intense hatred of idolatry of any kind.
Paul’s teaching shows that the only reality is God. Idolatry distorts man’s conception of the world and external nature. Idolatry is the enemy of mankind.

While the New Covenant writings contain several passages that advociate the obedience to the Law of God, there are three passages that seem to put it all into perspective:
1. Application passage(s), Gal 3:6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Also see Hebrews 7
2. The connecting verse is, James 2:17, “Even so faith, if it hath not works [acceptable unto God, i.e. the required words established in the Law, as opposed to the dead works of men.] is dead, being alone, …”
3. The foundational passage being, Gen 26:1-6, “1 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. 2 And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of: 3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; 4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; 5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.
6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar: …”
Now, if we are not following the examples set by the ‘father’ of the faithful, then why hold him up as our example?
In the churches I have visited over the years, the arguments they use seem to rest on Christians obeying the ‘moral’ laws of the Bible and discarding the ‘ceremonial’ laws. The problem rests on two issues. (1) Who can, with authority, determine what laws are ‘moral’ and what laws are only ‘ceremonial’? (2) When, where, and to whom did God give the right, authority or privilege of changing (altering, removing) His instructions in righteousness (Torah/Tanakh)? The Roman Church [falsely] claims to have that right and has proudly asserted it, but I know of no other. The ‘other’ churches that have taken that path have simply taught the changes without claiming authority to do so, and leave the justification argument as, “Well, everyone else is doing it, so it must be OK.”
For over 7 years I have been Torah observant and studying Torah. I have been with various Messianic groups in several cities across the US. For the past 2 years I have spent much time alone in prayer and study asking my heavenly Father to cleanse me, guide me and reveal what He wants me to know and do. I have been through quite a few trials and He has been 100% faithful. For the past few months I decided to begin studying the Apostolic Scriptures. It is interesting because I am seeing that some Torah commands no longer seem to be applicable. That leaves me wondering what of Torah is and is not applicable? Also, the Apostolic Scriptures seem to say that when we are not walking in the flesh there is no need for the Torah. Although, how many people know what walking in the Spirit is?
The following are just a few Scriptural examples that have incited my questions:
Rom 2:29 But he [is] a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision [is that] of the heart, in the spirit, [and] not in the letter; whose praise [is] not of men, but of God.
1Cr 7:18 Is any man called being circumcised? let him not become uncircumcised. Is any called in uncircumcision? let him not be circumcised.
1Cr 7:19 Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.
1Cr 7:20 Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called.
1Cr 8:4 As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol [is] nothing in the world, and that [there is] none other God but one.
1Cr 8:5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)
1Cr 8:6 But to us [there is but] one God, the Father, of whom [are] all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom [are] all things, and we by him.

I will attempt to give a quick overview for your consideration.
First, not even Jesus Christ observe all of the Old Covenant Law to obey and to do it – to fulfill it, yes, but to ‘do it’, no. Reason: Because not all of the Law applied to Him. Neither does all of the Mt. Sinai Law apply to everyone today. We should, however, follow after the example set by Yeshua and follow after those laws that do apply – not in order to earn our salvation, but because if we ‘love Him’ we will have a desire to ‘obey Him’. He is the embodiment of all of the Father’s instructions in living a righteous life before our God.
Questions such as circumcision have been around for many centuries. However, the law of circumcision remains the same as it has always has. The problem is that for mankind, it has been used as an act of obedience but without understanding. If one will review the Mt. Sinai law through the instructions provided Yeshua in Mattityahu (Matthew) chapters five through seven, a clearer understanding becomes possible.
For example the law of circumcision takes on a greater significance. WE all understand that circumcision under the Old Covenant was included in the Mt. Sinai Law as a continuation of the sign of the covenant God made with Abraham. Then under the New Covenant, we have the spiritual principle taught as a requirement for all disciples to have their hearts circumcised, rather than their flesh.
What is important to recognize is that there is nothing new in the New Covenant that is not first reveled in the Old. Example, compare Colossians 2:10-12, Romans 4:12 with Deuteronomy 10:16; 30:6, Jeremiah 4:4 and 1 Corinthians 7:19. What we see is that the sign of the covenant between God and men is the sign of circumcision – and it has always been a cutting away of the foreskin from around one’s heart. The sign in the flesh is as it always has been – a physical sign of a deeper spiritual significance. It is a change of one’s heart from obedience to the letter of the Law because we have to (out of fear, death), to obedience to the Spirit of the Law because we want to (out of love. life). It is a transformation from the letter of the law that kills (the curse of the Law) to the liberty of the Law (life) that is found within its Spirit.

This past week I had a lovely discussion with a charismatic believer about his statement of faith: No works, no faith – we just had 2 different lists of works.
Questions I frequently ask Protestants in my Bible study group, who believe that they are truly keeping the whole law(thats now only the 10 words) are: What God do you believe in?
The One who asked for your tithes, but not eat kosher (in the same chapter?)
Every Sunday the commandments are read and they truly believe that they are keeping Sabbath on a Sunday. Even the minister has 2 opinions: his own, as well as a church confession – related opinion. If the minister can’t keep to One God, One Way, how much more the audience? They really have no idea Who this God is that they believe in. But do I? How can I be a light onto the world if I haven’t got a clue Who my God is and what He asks of me? And yes, by doing Torah physically, I learn the Spiritual.

Gayle, what we need to “use” and to utilize are the words that have already been given unto us and those words are G-d’s words, the words found in G-d’s book, the Word of G-d.
G-d’s Word, the Word of G-d, the word of truth is our Torah. This Torah, this Book of Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth, our Bible, is (and always will remain forever) will be our Textbook for daily living.
Torah literally is translated “instruction”. We have in our possession and laying open before our eyes the instruction manual for life. -Life more abundant and free- if we would (A) pay attention (heed) and (B) hearken (do what it says).
The written words of G-d and (now) the Living Word of G-d are inseparable. We cannot have ONE without the other. The scriptures (all of them) reveal our Savior and our Savior verifies, exemplifies, and exhibits the “how to” of daily living. He went about “doing good.” If He is our Master (and He is) and we are to follow Him (do as I do) then we also are to go about in our daily lives- “doing good.”
We do these “good things”-out of a regenerated heart, a heart that has been made new by the new birth. We (all- Jew and Gentile alike) stand in need of this new heart. We (all) need a new heart for a new start. A heart of love. Love for the Father and love for each other- brought to you and delivered to me by our Sponsor, the LORD Jesus (who is the) Christ- Yeshua HaMaschiach.
He has said, (we are welcoming His words, -right?) – without Me-, (carl) you can do nothing.. John 15.5) This passage in the book of John is very key. Our job, our task, our duty and delight is to “abide in the vine.” All the parts and pieces of this puzzle have been identified and tagged. (some assembly required!) Who is the Vine? He is. Who is the Vine-Dresser? Who is the ONE doing the pruning? Why are we pruned? (ouch..) How are we to bear fruit? (some one-hundred fold!) -Read the Book:- “it’s in there!”
We (all) are to walk by faith. We have been clearly and plainly instructed from G-d’s Book of Instruction (His Torah)- “without faith it is impossible to please Him.” Is this true? (it is written!..)
And faith comes by ???? (hearing) and hearing by the word(s) of G-d. G-d speaks. We listen. We obey. We are blessed- even in the knowing we have been obedient unto Him, who is our ABBA Father.
All this requires a clean heart. G-d will not occupy a vessel (us) who is dirty. I (too) refuse to pour coffee into a cup with a dead roach in it. (imagine that!). We must be clean before Him. If this is possible.. (Is it?)- then, how is this accomplished? – what do the scriptures say? “Word of G-d, speak..”
Instruct my heart in the night seasons, guide me, lead me in a straight path, (shortest distance between two points!), deliver me from evil and direct my steps.
