Signs of the Times

But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. 2 Timothy 3:1 NASB

Last days – So how will we know we are in the last days? First, let’s examine the question. Do we need to know? Is the question even appropriate? In an important sense, this question reveals human pride, not religious humility. The truth is that God knows—and the rest is none of our business. We are asked to be prepared, not to discern the time of the end. In fact, we might ask a more important question. “Why do we think we need to know?” That question often reveals a desire for “secret” knowledge and that leads to pride. So if we are going to ask about the end, we must first be aware of the danger posed by this question. OK?

Now notice that Paul does tell Timothy something about the last days. The Greek is eschatais hemerais enstesontai, the last days that will come. Perhaps the Greek is better rendered, “the last days that will be present,” since the idea of “impending” is not found in the verb enistemi. We derive our theology of eschatology from the Greek word for “last,” that is, eschatos. Certainly Paul wanted Timothy to recognize something about these days so that he might be prepared for them. But now we are in for a shock. Not one single characteristic of Paul’s description of the last days has any predictive value. In other words, the list that Paul provides tells us absolutely nothing about world events, fulfillment of prophecy, future occurrences, political consequences or astrophysical phenomena. Look at the list: men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, disobedient to parents, malicious, brutal, reckless, conceited. We will look at all of these, but we must be impressed that there is nothing here that would allow us to fix a date, make a prediction, find a secret or write a book about the “end times.” What Paul provides is a list of human behaviors, not political or cosmic occurrences, and his list is true in the first century, the sixth century, the fourteenth century and today. In fact, his list has been true since Tubal-Cain.

Then why did Paul bother to point it out to Timothy? Doesn’t history demonstrate that men have always been described by this list of infamy? Paul specifies what the record already shows because he doesn’t want Timothy to have false hope in the Kingdom. Paul uses the verb ginosko (“But realize”). This is not the verb of intuitive self-awareness. This is the verb of knowledge by collective examination. Look at the facts. Don’t be naïve by thinking that since the Messiah came things will somehow get progressively better and better. In fact, just the opposite is true. Before that last day, things will get progressively worse. The key word is “progressively.” That means we won’t experience a sudden increase in ungodly behavior. It will just creep up on us. Like the frog in the pot of water, we won’t be aware of the rise in unrighteousness until it is too late. So Paul warns Timothy. Stay alert. Don’t fix your gaze over the horizon. The “son” will rise soon enough. Remember where you are. Do what God requires here. Now let’s go look at the list.

I am praying that you sit up straight. Regardless of what you think feels better there is no substitute for sitting up straight when your back hurts. I also pray that you have access to cold packs to apply to the painful area. I am giving advice from personal experience. Hope you have a safe and fruitful trip.

Daria

Also speaking from experience, wise advice, John! Also, try not to hang your head over your computer or sit for longer than 25 minutes without getting up and stretching.
My prayers to our God are with you, Skip.

Michael C

Praying for you.

Benjamin

I am praying that you receive wholeness, health and completeness in spirit and body. May God watch over you always!

Skip,
You make a valid point today that we all will do well to keep in mind as we try to keep a wise perspective on things prophetic. The recent frenzy on the blood moons is a case in point. It is so tempting to go overboard on these signs and other signs too.
Certainly we need to avoid setting dates for His Second Coming. Messiah told us that such business is none of our business, not even His business!. Yet, we see some teachers in the Messianic community and in other sectors of Christianity who just cannot seem to resist making announcements of projected dates for various prophetic happenings only to see their projections fall flat Even some New Testament writings give us the impression that they expected His return to occur in their time.
Yet we would be unwise to ignore the significant amount of space and detail given to prophetic matters in the Bible. And we quickly notice that there are still lots of unfulfilled prophecies sitting in the pages that we should not be ignorant of. God’s prophecies are a sure thing to come true.
In your verse from today’s TW we find Paul telling Timothy that “difficult times will come”. When the going gets tough, few things are more reassuring than the sure word of prophecy for it tells the reader of Word of God that there is a better age up ahead for the “called out ones” when war, disease, famine, persecution, will be a thing of the past.( Rev.20 – 21)

Skip, blessings on you for a safe and fruitful trip

Daria

I facilitate an on-line Prayer Team. Thought I’d post here what I prayed with them. Hope it encourages you, Skip.

Father God Almighty, YHVH, Ric and I thank You over and over again for bringing Skip into our lives. His own learning and teaching and living it out has transformed our lives. We love him, LORD, and we appreciate him and we cheer him on as he travels the world to teach and to help others wherever he’s needed. Right now, he’s soon boarding a plane to China; he and his back are dreading the very long flight. Remind him to heed the good advice he’s gotten from his doctors and us who live with chronic back injuries. Cause him to get out of that chair and stretch, prevent him from hanging his head over his computer thinking it’s all so very necessary and, if he is taking medication, make it work against the pain without numbing his brain. Draw him to You during this new experience of suffering. I praise You, LORD. …… amen

Pam

Amen

Daria

Skip, If you see this post, know that I’m getting prayers from our Prayer Team, sent to God, forwarded on to me to let you know you have so many more people (people who don’t even know you) praying for you. Seems most of the messages have to do with REST FOR YOU… I hope you find shalom.

Daria

PRAISE GOD you have a safe, comfortable place to lie down and not move! I’ll forward this good news on to “my” Prayer Team.
Be kind to Skip, please!?!?!

Derek

Praying for you Skip

Suzanne

Praying for you Skip. May you find unexpected places of respite and times of refreshing on this trip. God bless you,

James

I really appreciate this article. I’ve been struggling with how much people focus on end-times prophecy when they can’t even get along with others today…it seems that we need to be focused on living a proper life now and trust that will prepare us for what comes.

That said, I’ve also struggled with what is mentioned in the article about how much prophecy is in Scripture. With as much as is there, it seems that it might be something that we should focus on…or, maybe, there is just so much because the cannon that we have was assembled by man and that is what man was focusing on…then as much as we are now. I’m not really sure but it leads to some interesting questions about making sure that we rightly handle what is before us both in not over-reacting but also in not under-reacting.

Skip, I will be praying for a comfortable flight to China and anointing to bring the EMET to the people to whom you will be ministering.

Pam

Be anxious for nothing!
I’ve told you these things so that you can know what’s coming and you will not be caught unaware.
NOW GO MAKE DISCIPLES!!! Teach them all that I have shown you.

I found this in the Jewish prayer book…”On the Doorposts of Your House.”

The Eternal One shall guard your coming and your going from this time forth and for ever. Psalm 121:7

God within and beyond me, Your presence pervades the world. Wherever I go , You are near to me. “If I take up the wings of the morning, and dwell on the ocean’s farthest shore, even there Your hand will lead me, Your strong hand will hold me.”
Psalm 139: 9-10

Now that I begin a new journey, I turn to You in confidence and trust, for You have always been a light to my path. May I go forth in health and safely reach my destination. May this journey not be in vain; and let me return in contentment to my home and my dear ones. Then will my travels be truly blessed. Amen

Shalom Tom and Marilyn Walter

Isn’t the focus of prophecy so that, when we see it being fulfilled, we can know THEN that it was from YHVH? Prophecy is written for those who are going through it, not for those who are before it. The book is shut for them. Prophecy is so that we can give credit and praise to Him Who holds it all. When it happens, that is. Which over 90% of the prophecy in that Good Book already has! So we have a lot already to give Him praise and credit for!

. . . What Paul provides is a list of human behaviors, not political or cosmic occurrences, and his list is true in the first century, the sixth century, the fourteenth century and today. But from TW Oct 6, 2014
. . . Beheaded – The news is grim. The world is filled with violence. Os Guinness gave us just a glimpse in his book Unspeakable. There has been more genocide, more sadistic atrocities, more expression of evil in our lifetimes than all the rest of human history combined. Man is not progressing toward the utopia of liberal dreams. He is racing toward the mouth of the pit at breakneck speed.

Human behaviors have always been bad but have there not been, relatively speaking, periods (even centuries) of better behavior? It seemed to me that most agreed (on Oct 6) that now was much worse than usual. I have heard immanent dates set for the last 50 years and so do not believe in them but is ungodly behavior “creeping” on us or “racing” at breakneck speed?

Patricia

Praying for your protection health and well being…
Ty for your work for the kingdom.
Isn’t Paul talking to Timothy about the “church crowd ” here ??
