I couldn’t help noticing the double door/gate near the bottom of this group of photos. Years ago, we designed and built a home in Pawleys Island for a VP of CocaCola who was at that time living in Singapore and then Indonesia, but he spent a lot of time on Bali. They sent us a freight container full of items to be incorporated into the home. One item was a door much like the one shown, magnificently carved and covered with bright colors and gold leaf. When we asked if we could reduce the foot-high threshold on the door, to be placed on their study, we were told, “Oh no. The people of Bali tell us that demons cannot lift their feet and must drag them, so all of the thresholds are that high to keep demons out of their gardens and yards and homes.” So I suppose none of this has changed — in Bali or Pawleys.
