Defining the Edges

And John answered and said, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to hinder him because he does not follow along with us.” Luke 9:49  NASB

With us – Who is with us?  That is the first question of denominational Christianity.  Who will conform to our dogmas, our doctrines?  Who will share our phileo fellowship?  (Notice I did not say agape fellowship).  The battle over the edges of acceptability began long before Luther and Calvin.  Here John, the beloved disciple, reports that those closest to Yeshua were myopically Messianic.  Did you notice that John does not say, “because he does not follow after You”?  Who follows the Christ is not important.  The real issue is who follows with us!

The Greek (meth’ hemon) sets the stage for John’s discontent.  This man does not attend or accompany the disciples.  The first implication of John’s accusation is that he and the other eleven are the only real followers.  After all, they are with Yeshua.  This other man is an outsider.  John reluctantly concedes that the outsider is actually casting out demons in the name of Yeshua, but John and the disciples consider this inappropriate, perhaps even suspect, since the man does not accompany them.  What do Presbyterians have to do with Catholics?  What do Pentecostals have to do with Baptists?  Outsiders are not welcomed in the true Body unless they conform to the expectations of the adherents.  Only the obviously chosen can be with Jesus!

Isn’t it odd that you have probably never heard a sermon preached on this verse?

Yeshua answers John, but His answer isn’t theologically comforting.  Yeshua points to the man’s actions.  This outsider is doing Kingdom works.  That is enough to distinguish him as one of the other disciples.  Yeshua looks at his life, his behavior, his impact on others.  He does not demand that this outsider sign a statement of faith or take a mandatory class in church membership.  I wonder why.  Do you suppose Yeshua is unconcerned about the man’s doctrine because his actions already portray a real relationship with the Father?  And what about the reverse?  Do you think Yeshua would have said the same thing about a man who espoused all the right doctrines but whose actions demonstrated no concern for the character of the Father?  What if John had come to Yeshua with, “This man is one of us because he says the right things”?  Would that have been sufficient?

John isn’t acting much like a Hebrew here.  Yeshua reminds him that Kingdom behavior trumps Kingdom vocabulary.  Is that what you think?  When you look across the street and see those Catholics, those Pentecostals, those Methodists, those Church of God by Prophecy people, do you think of them as Kingdom brothers and sisters you would welcome in your home?  Or are you like John, hindering them because they aren’t following with you?

As I continue to talk with four or five people each day, I learn so much about what we need to be praying for.  Here is one that you all need to know.  Read Sonii comment at the end of the post and Donna’s request at the end of this post.  I’ll be talking with you.

Oh brother John! Peter! James!- “it’s not about you!”- haven’t you heard?
Poor Peter. Remember his actions on the Mount of Transfiguration, where the Messiah ascended into Heaven? “Let us build three tabernacles- one for Moses, one for Elijah, and one for you, Yeshua. -No, Peter, ..no.
Yeshua is not Moses, neither is He Elijah. He is (the) LORD. Guys.. “the LORD, He is G-d.” Yeshua is YHWH incarnate. Fully G-d and fully man. He is the (only) G-d/man. The second perfect Adam. The Lamb from G-d which takes away the sins of the world. (Does this include Methodists?). “For all have sinned,” -does this include Baptists? Yeshua-The only ONE among us without sin.
Who is with us? Yes, fantastic question.. “Who is with us?” My friends, and disciples of today- whatever your “flavor”- Episcopal,Lutheran, Catholic, Messianic- what is His name? What name was given unto Him at birth? What is His “birth-name?” His name shall be called….? “Therefore the LORD Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a Son, and will call Him Immanu’ El.” (Isaiah 7:14) Fast forward through the centuries..- “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanu’ El” (which means, G-d with us). -Matthew 1.23.
Now we may ask the question once again– “Who is with us?” Peter? Who is this man? James? John? Skip? Carl? This, -this, is Christ the King. LORD of heaven and of earth. LORD of the living and of the dead. LORD of all. You see fellas.. “it’s not about you!” This power, this authority to heal, to deliver, to “perform,” to function- it all has it’s source in your Teacher. He (and He alone) is the Chosen ONE. His name is Immanu’ El. G-d has been your teacher for how many years now? C’mon guys..- let’s give credit where credit is due..-“Give unto the LORD the glory due His name.” And you do know His name, -right? You have been walking with Him for how long now? Looking, listening.. learning- and you still don’t know? That’s okay.. G-d is incredibly patient. He will see to it that your eyes will be opened, -it just may take a little while longer.. Dear brothers, -dear John, -“it is the LORD.” Amen.
One other small tidbit for those belonging to our “exclusive” membership club.. er..church. His words were “whosoever will” may come.. Are these words exclusive or inclusive? What is meant by “whosoever will?” Hmm.. And what about -“other sheep have I which are not of this fold?” (And here I thought we were the only ones..- oh well..-that’s what I get for thinking..) -For G-d “so loved” the world.. Jew only right? Lutheran only right? or maybe we could look once again, for the first time, at these His words.. -“whosoever will.”

Very good Skip! You just articulated what I tried to explain to JW’s that came to my door. I asked them what they thought of the scripture John 17:20-21 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I then asked did they ever pray for me or my congregation? “Oh, we take care of our own.” I said, that’s a shame, because my congregation does not pray for yours either, nor do we even know who belongs to the XXXChurch down the street nor do they know or pray for us..and so on and so on…Now, think what is going to happen in the future, with Islam…they are going to decaptitate you just as fast as they would me, doesn’t matter what denomination, cult, belief…UNITY..that is what it is about…and sadly, today, that is what the Church is without. TORAH portion today..Vayikra/Leviticus 1:1-5:26

Skip God bless you for this great charge. I wish this could be spread out to the bigots who are destroying the Kindom and building their own empires in the name ministries.

This is something that caught my ear today http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuxejhBOCOo. It’s a great story and caused me to think what this world would be like if everyone wanted for others what they wish for themselves. This captures a piece of it. Also got me to think of the frustration I feel trying to share with people about Sabbath, mitzvot and other things, I see the Ruach at work in others like this video, and know that they believe in Yeshua, I just want them to see the tremendous gift that is the commandments of God. I see that if you open just the smallest hole by faith and obedience God comes rushing through with more than you ever expected. To those I talk to now I’m not trying to change their thinking anymore, I’m just offering them a gift they have sorely missed out on. My wife doesn’t believe me, even when God does amazing things when I’m trying to be obedient to Him. Believe me I’ve seen His love a lot lately and I want to share this exciting experience with all my fellow believers who don’t have this understanding yet, I will never question their faith just ask what God has done for them lately, when they have nothing to say I’ll have a testimony for them and I won’t have to remember too far back, hopefully just a few minutes. Sorry I couldn’t highlight the link but it is an awesome, spirit lifting video.

“Is that what you think?”

As I have mentioned before, in my experience, many folks with very different ideas.

Seem much closer to God than I am.
